K10D Cables

Posted 18/09/2017 - 13:14 Link
Hi,
New to the site, so just finding my way around. While i am browsing the posts, could someone advise on K10D Cables. Specifically, can the K10D be connected to an Android Tablet via a cable. The obvious use for this is to view pictures immediately after they have been taken, rather than having to remove the card and transfer them, just to see if everything looks ok.

Thanks in advance

Software wise there's PK_Tether

Regarding the cable, a Google search found this thread on another Pentax forum

I've not tried it myself but those may give you a starting point.

Not sure about Android Tablets, Android had barely come out when the K10D was first announced. I'm not saying it can't be done but suspect you'd have to write your own app and understand the cable connections to get them talking, and would be at your own risk. If you succeed you could publish it for others!
Having said that, the PK_Tether page shows what looks like an Android phone in the graphic so maybe it can (but didn't think it could though, just for the PC.)

Some recent Pentax cameras can link to Android and iOS through WiFi, but the app still seems a bit flaky.

If you wish to go high end, there's the Pentax Image Transmitter 2 software that works with the 645z and Android/iOS (if you can afford the £180 for the CD!)

Perhaps someone here still has the relevant cable and software that they can pass on, but pretty sure it would be just for PC. and of course PCs have moved on too!

Thanks for the info JAK.
After posting here i contacted Pentax customer support to get their advice. Just had the reply :

Dear Mr Brown

Thank you for contacting Pentax-Ricoh

Unfortunately this is not possible.
Some owners have tested 3rd party apps and cables to do this.
With the K10 or other older models no successful results are known.

With kind regards,

Gerrit

Thanks for updating us, Pleased you had a quick response. I expect it is possible but you'd have to understand the data connections and how to interpret them and then develop an app. It might even require a bespoke camera firmware. Guess pretty time consuming and then may not work! I can certainly understand why it hasn't been achieved as Android was still in its infancy so developers wouldn't have even considered it. At least you know you might get some success tethering to a PC even if not a mobile or why not try a newer camera known to allow tethering to mobile?
