K1 and Lightroom tether

Quick question.

I'm hosting a drop in photo shoot session locally to where I live to drum up some business to pay for my new puppy and also build on my customer base.

I usually shoot in people's homes where they can view on the back of the camera but "see" the final edited images on a pen drive when they choose what they want to keep and pay for, but this drop in session I don't really want to be taking the memory card in and out of the camera every 2 seconds so I was wondering what options there are for tethering?

I know I can select WiFi on the camera and using Image Sync view and download to a tablet running the app but I don't think I can do that to a laptop??

Before I could tether using PK Tether but don't want to do that with the K1 as I know Lightroom has Pentax K1 support.

Has anyone tethered to a laptop for RAW file transfer in real time?

Wirelessly would be ideal

I have done it wired from from my K1 to a laptop using Image sync.. Then linked the laptop to a projector. All went very well for a presentation I gave.. Obviously you wont need the projector.

I just tried downloading the image sync app onto my macbook but it says only for iOS devices, so I guess you can get it for Windows?

K1 files are big to transfer especially RAWs. Because it's going to be all the same lighting can't you set in camera JPG's fairly close to what you want and transfer them.

An Eye-Fi card can transfer through a router. It doesn't need to be connected to the internet.

My old X2 card transfers 10MB K-5 JPG's in 10 secs. for each shot.

Any editor could pick them up from the DL folder/directory.

Eye-Fi are now selling a card that will connect without a router direct to your PC

The Eye-Fi card might be discontinued. They did licence most of it to Toshiba and the Toshiba FlashAir W-04 32 GB SDHC Class 10 Memory Card £23 ish seems similar except you have to select from the Laptop which thumbnails to DL. The Eye-Fi downloaded everything which is what I prefer.

Image sync doesn’t transfer files, it shows what you see in live view or review.

Thanks all. So Image Sync can view the jpegs on screen but can't transfer the raw files?

I remember back in the day I had a Eye-Fi pro card that could transfer raw files into a named folder on the desktop and then lightroom would "watch" that folder and auto import new images.

You use Toshiba software on the PC or MAC. Image Sync is not needed.

Yes I have a windows 10 laptop... Though thinking about it now it may have been windows 8 at the time. It was about a year to 18 months ago...

Image sync in my experience acts like a proxy rear screen but with your controls added so has additional benefits when taking shots; for exposures you can scroll down speed, aperture, iso etc. very easily. Best though is with a touch screen like on an iPad you just touch any part of the image to select a focus point, and of course you can activate the shutter remotely. You cannot zoom the lens though of course because this is a manual function.

You can also review your shots but the resolution appears like that of the camera’s rear screen and stays at that level, so when zooming in the image looks unsharp, unlike when you do the same in camera. Not great for checking whether you have nailed focus then.

As it uses touch screen I guess that’s why it won’t work on Apple laptops but maybe others. I can see the benefits for studio work, so if you do a lot of that it may be worth getting a tablet.

Got it working!

Google and YouTube are wonderful things!

So it turns out that once you've updated the firmware and downloaded and installed the Tether for Lightroom then all you need is a micro usb cable and off you go!

Showing Lightroom Tether has found Pentax K1
