One though is that the list of supported lenses has increased for distortion correction etc. I had no problems with the upgrade, however when I tured on the lens correction functions, I had the same behaviour.

I'm sure I didn't have lens correction turned on unless it occurred during the u/g.

It seems a likely possibility to me, I suggest turning it on, both chromatic and distortion, taking a picture and then turning it off, take another picture and see if there is any difference in the write time.

I turned on lens correction as you suggested to find it took 4s. for the card activity light to come on & continuous shooting stopped at 4 frames.
Thanks for solving the mystery!

The manual says the default setting for lens correction is OFF. It seems firmware 1.1 can change that to ON in some upgrades. Very odd.

As a public service I rang CR Kennedy (Pentax agent in Oz) informing the service dept. of the lens correction "feature". The bloke who took my call got quite defensive saying they had done lots of firmware upgrades on the K-7 without a problem. I told him it was an uncommon occurrence but I knew of one other person who had the same problem (slow to download image file to card & max of 4 RAW or jpg shots on high speed continuous shooting) as me after the u/g. I told him it was obviously an uncommon problem but if someone rang them complaining about this they would be able to help the customer. He didn't seem rapturously enthusiastic but did sort of thank me.
