K-7 and trouble with USB connection!

Hi everybody!

I have newly bought a secondhand K-7, wich is wonderful in all aspects. The trouble is that, until tonight I could transfer images with the USB cable that came with the camera, but now it doesn't seem to work. The guy had the installation program CD misplaced, he couldn't find it, but it seemed ok to work with it in my mac and iphoto...

I have tried to connect to a PC and the MAC, neither will work. The camera starts in a normal way, not in transferring mode!

Have I damaged it? Or is it software trouble?

Please give some guidance!
With kind regards,

make sure you have some images on the card and the card works OK.
check the cables and connectors for damage
try on another PC/imac and a different USB port
if you have the manual check the settings on p275 (can be downloaded)
reset the K-7 settings to factory default
buy a new cable from ebay ( cheap)

then phone a friend
Lurking is shirking.!

it should work with no installation at all, just as any usb disk.
if all fails, buy a sd cardreader...
good luck

Thank you both... I have tried what you have suggested, doesn't work !

I think I have to by another cable, or a sd reader...

Thanks anyway!

You should connect with the camera turned off and a reasonable charge (25%+) on the battery. Turn the camera on and open 'My Computer' to see if there is a new drive in there.

I've done that, it cannot find any device! doesn't recognize the camera. It doesn't seem to have any connection at all with the computers.

It sounds like a cable problem , I had that when my dog tried to eat the cable .And try another usb socket the Left hand socket on my Powerbook is fine, plug in the camera and Iphoto opens straight away . The right hand socket works fine with a card reader or my pda but the camera nothing ! ... Jeff...

Hi Jeff,

I think it was my little daughter who has put her little teeth on the usb cable. I'm going to buy and try with another cable, if that won't work, I suppose it has to be a card reader!

Thanks for your response!

Hi Dilek.

First of all the USB- mini usb cables, are standard and easily replaced.
Secondly, why are you using a USB cable to transfer images.
I presume you are transfering images from camera to PC?

Far better to get an HDSC card reader, and insert your HCSD card into the reader, and enter you reader into a USB port on your PC.
That way you don't need a USB cable, and the reader can be kept in a safe place(like your camera bag)
My card reader is a CADENA +, which I purchaseed from the 7 DAY SHOP, they are inexpensive, (VAT free because their warehouse is in the Channel Islands)

I never used the setup CD because windows will auto detect the reader as a removable drive!

Hope this helps you,

Kindest regards,

Peter.

P.S. E-mail me if you're stuck.

I have to strongly (but politely) disagree with that comment.

I have had card readers which you completely corrupted cards, and the cheaper the reader, the more likely it is to happen.

The card reader/writer built into the camera is of a far, far higher specification so you are much safer using a USB lead and having the card in the camera.

I've seen both firewire and usb ports on cameras, dvd burners and other computer peripheral break from rough handling or constant use, plugging and unplugging... card readers are cheap and easy to replace... but what does a damaged usb port do to the resale value of an expensive camera?

this is no different than the uv filter "For Protection" debate...

So go with what works for you.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Less than a broken SDHC slot.

you can break those? that has got to be rare, and perhaps caused by a factory defect?

A defective card, just use a crud card and watch the fins snap off in the slot. I've got a nasty 32Gb Kingston card that is not going near my camera.

I bought a new cable today, it didn't work! I think I have damaged the USB port!!
Although the battery is fully charged, the camera this time indicates that the battery is empty when I try to transfer images! I can't figure this out? Shall I contact the guy whom i bought the camera from?
With kind regards,
