K-5 - hand-held IR pictures at last?

The answer is maybe.

One of the things I hadn't seen fully resolved was the issue of the IR sensitivity, so this afternoon I tested it in between rain showers. I've got a Samsung GX-1L (= Pentax *ist DL2) that can do handheld IR work in good light at high ISO, but you can't see through the viewfinder. The GX10 needs extremely long exposures with an IR filter, and you can't see through the viewfinder on that one either.

The K-5 does give a rather dim Live View version of the scene with an R72 IR filter, and exposures I tried today without much IR present were about 1/10th wide-open on the kit lens at ISO 6400. Summer sunshine with plenty of foliage should give much better results. The IR focus is all over the place, and doesn't work in Live View at all but setting it via the distance scale seems to work ok.

In the above shot the conifers don't tend to give much IR reflectance and obviously the bigger tree has no leaves. The sunshine was very weak.

But it did manage to capture the scene, and in summer light it could probably be handheld...

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. Never tried IR before, might do so now.

I did some IR with the K100.

Exposures were in the seconds so a tripod was needed. It was Compose, MF, Slot in the filter and shoot.

I was very happy with the results.

Haven't tried the K7 but I will now.

If you want to do IR but can't persuade your DSLR to play (like my K-m) there is a solution - Ilford SFX film!

Anyone got experience of having a Pentax properly converted to IR rather than attaching R72's and the like? Got an old DS2 sat around doing nothing...

No specific experience, but I have seen the results from other photographers' converted DSLRs. When done properly, the results are excellent.

Sadly I couldn't find anyone to do a conversion in the UK - there are only one or two firms that do it, and they're only interested in Nikon and Canon. There are places in the States that do it - but the costs involved in shipping etc are such that you'd end up being better off buying a converted camera in the UK instead - even if it's not a Pentax.

My recommendation for people who want to dabble in IR is actually to consider something like a converted Canon G10/11 - the image quality is excellent and the liveview screen really helps. I know it's not from a Pentax camera and not really for this site - so here is a link to what a converted G11 can do:

Advanced Camera Services in Norfolk can apparently convert Pentax DSLR's.

Peter - their website says they will (only the istD) but when you talk to them they won't...

I tried to get K100DS converted by them (and argued that the sensor was pretty much the same as the ist they claim to be happy to convert) but they refused to contemplate it.

In conversation, they told me that Pentax cameras are rebranded Samsungs, that the build quality inside is terrible, and that they are only happy to work with Nikons or Canons. I gave as good as I got and then gave up.

Sad

There must be a lot of K-5's floating about where they've had to separate the IR/AA filter to fix the stains - sounds like a business opportunity to turn them into IR-capable cameras...

Odd then that Pentax are continuing to produce new K mount bodies, but Samsung aren't.

Do they really think that Samsung make cameras for Pentax .

Sad indeed, I was contemplating having my *istD converted to IR by them.

Interestingly, the 645D does not have the IR stopping low pass filter over the sensor. Start saving . . .
