IstD one of the forerunners of DSLR`s

Well, Pentax were one of the first to showcase a full-frame DSLR - this was prior to *ist series - based on the MZ-S it had a Philips 6MP sensor. Canon, Kodak, Fuji and Nikon were already selling DSLRs by then, but none sold a FF camera
Technological dead end - Pentax chose correctly not to proceed. Contax used the sensor and the company died.
The *ist D was Pentax's response to the Canon EOS 10D and Nikon D100 - IIRC the launch price was well over £1000 with 18-35 FA-J lens. It was very much a sticking plaster approach and the only differentiating feature was its size. Canon and Nikon were quick to launch the 300D and D70 at much less than £1K and suddenly the *ist D looked overpriced. The S, L, S2 and L2 were launched in quick succession to capture some of the

Many thanks for that info.
Good to know Ricoh took up the Pentax mantle and decided to keep up the flow with new models, not sure about the Full Frame model due out, my opinion is like many other forum members though, the blurb images are nothing to write home about, could put many off buying one which would be a shame, you know has well has I do if Ricoh spend many thousands in R& D on new models and the take_up/sales don`t match or supersede the investment then Ricoh will drop the Pentax brand like an HOT POTATOE, and that would be disastrous.
I recall that the Amiga brand was taken on, and big plans for new models where supposedly in the pipeline, that brand was dropped now look what we are left with.
With the exception of Linux, which has you know is the largest open source O/S
we are left with the BIG TWO.
The BIG TWO dictate to their potential customers how the future of computing should be.
We as potential camera buyers cannot allow a similar situation to occur
When multinational companies such as Microsoft, Apple, Canon, Nikon, First,Bus, Arriva,Virgin, Nestle and very many others and their likes have little or no competition, then it is THEY, that decide what we the customers should have and how much we should pay for that item or service etc.

Quite untrue, otherwise why would I have kept it all these years? after the istD I bought a K10D, then a K20D, then a K5 and I now have a K3II
Following the demise of the K10D I have the K5 and K3II in my camera bag, so why wouldn't I leave them behind and take the istD if there was a risk of damage, it's worth far less than It would cost me to buy a decent compact and I find it far more versatile, plus who needs huge files for party snaps.

I agree... my *istD is still ploughing on...
and I wouldn't have dreamed of taking the K7 into Leeds City Centre after 5pm...
and certainly not at any time on the w/e.
I did brave Arcadia [in Headingley] one lunchtime during the week with the K7...
but I'd managed to park up top and came down through what was Safeways...
got the shots I wanted at the resolution I wanted, put the camera back into the shopping bag and went home immediately!!
Then walked back and had a pleasant afternoon's session working my way across the pumps...
with my Optio LS1100 in my pocket.... for eventualities!!
I didn't have the K3-II then... it hadn't been born.
I will be keeping the *istD going, tho'....
not for old time's sake...
but because it is a good camera and....
is the only one of the three that still operates the iris on all my old analogue Pentax K mount glassware...
it was the first I could afford... at £595 from Jessops in Leeds with that kit lens that wasn't bad... but wasn't as good as some!
That now languishes in the "might need it sometime" bag... the *istD is currently sporting my old Cokin mid-range zoom with demi-macro ability...
but is equally at home with the 40mm pancake from my old MX and the 50mm 1.7 from my ME Super and the Tamron Adaptall-2 75>250mm zoom that I bought the K2 to balance [all still going strong... but used on B&W film only!]
I still like my *istD...
but I would love a digital back for the K2 and the MX...
no preview needed... and just the ability to set it to an ISO...
and a micro-SD card as the "film"!
Anyone for a Nettlethrasher....

The honor of selling the world's first FF DSLR goes to Contax and not Canon like so many folks believe. The body was the "N Digital".

Don't knock the istD. They still sell for £100 today and about £80 for a DS. I love mine and I still use it

I still have my *istD (more exactly, my youngest grandson does).
Initially I kept it to use where I was nervous about taking my main camera (climbing etc.), but now my grandson uses it when we are out.
He is enthusiastic about it, and it's good to see it still being used.

Whilst Fatspider has apparently a low opinion of the istD series, there must have been quite a number of photographers who began their Pentax digital experience with this particular series of cameras, I seem to remember back in 2003 when the istD was first advertised it sold for around £800 body only, quite expensive in 2003, it was equivalent to 6 weeks wages for me, again I am probably wrong about that also not about the wages, BUT the cost of the camera.
Is there a Pentax DSLR that has a swing out monitor, live view, and a minimum 100 ISO, a USB port that I could connect the camera to a 7" monitor, my eye is not has good as the two I used to have
