Is now a good time to upgrade to a K-5?

But does a K-x with nice glass take a better shot than a K5 with the kit-lens? Guessing the answer is subjective...
K-x is cool... I love it but I really wish I had 2 control wheels and visable AF points in the viewfinder...
No more student loans now so it's gonna be a while before I can afford a new camera body...

has anyone here made then upgrade from the kx? Already have a small collection of glass so seems to be the natural route to take.
Yes, I have upgraded from the K-x, but have also kept the K-x too. I can confirm:
- K-5 transforms autofocus with a 55-300 lens - no more hunting!!
- K-5 is significantly faster to respond
- K-5 has better colour depth and detail
- K-5 can retain more dynamic range
- K-5 is significantly better built
- K-5 is far better with old 'manual' lenses and makes these an absolute pleasure to use (more accurate exposure, brighter viewfinder)
- K-5 has a better LCD screen
- K-5 has a built-in level (it works great on mine and is accurate)
- K-5 ROCKS!!
However, K-x is a fantastic camera and I will not be selling it anytime soon.

Currently on a Pentax hiatus until an FF Pentax is released

I'm in two minds whether to keep the K-x once I've got a K-5 though.

Interesting stuff. I'm probably about to make the exact same jump. Making the AF actually work on the 55-300 is a nice bonus! I just figured it was the cheapness of the lens.
I've not had any problems with the 55-300 AF - before I got the K-5 I used it extensively on my K10D at airshows and found it excellent, if not quite long enough.
Problems arise because of two things:
- Its long focus throw means that to go from one end of the focus ring to the other can take a while.
- If you lose a moving subject from the centre of the viewfinder, the AF will hunt.
I use auto AF-point selection to get over this at airshows - it effectly makes the central area much bigger, so I'm less likely to lose the subject.
The trick is to use QuickShift to get the focus in approximately the right place before you ask the AF to go to work. It's quick then.

I have just upgraded from K20 to K 5 after a great time of thinking, as I was wondering should I wait for a possible K 5 upgrade and maybe a FF camera. However, I bit the bullet and have had the K 5 for 2 week's and glad I purchased it. I was also pleasantly surprised selling my K 20, got a very good price! especially for a 3 year device.

Another David here who jumped from Kx to K5. I kept my Kx for a while (used it as a backup body for a wedding) but then sold it for a very good price on Amazon. The K5 handling and control is much better, so taking the Kx out seemed a step down and I could not justify a second body.
But the Kx images were very good and I think that the image quality jump in resolution is not that huge. Ditto for dynamic range, but the K5 is better. I have gone over to mostly prime lenses now, good quality glass will make a much bigger difference to image quality than moving from the Kx (or Kr) did. I also find that a fast lens makes much more difference to the brightness of the viewfinder than the just the difference between K5 and Kx, but again, the K5 is better and appears bigger. Upshot, the Kx is a cracking camera, I miss the colour of my navy one. There is nothing really technical that got in my way, but I like the K5 for its proper mirror lockup, better bracketing, being able to see where the camera is focussing etc. In the hand, the K5 is not that much bigger than the Kx. It feels more solid and is weather resistant, but those are not that crucial for me, I had the Kx in the rain and I dont chuck my cameras about. My K5 level is off by about 3 bars (pitiful, it was one of the features I would use and would save me having a green cube permanently on top of the camera) but the rest of it seems to work fine.

My KR will go to my son in law for his birthday next month.
My daughter has a purple RZ10 from us.

My son has just turned up with a new K5 for me bought from those nice people at SRS(he has a K20D). Not even my birthday!

I must admit I'm still waiting for a realy good Pentax compact. I notice they've finally put a backlit CMOS on the WG2. My wife had a Ricoh R8 (Nice camera, terrible controls)before the purple Pentax RZ10(useless above base ISO). Let's hope the two makes together improve things in that area eh?
