The Tokina is not made in Pentax mount because they are basically the same lens. Either Pentax licensed it from Tokina and added weather reisistance, SDM motor and their coating or the other way around and Tokina downgraded it to make it cheaper.

No one is quite sure but optically they are the same ... as are the 12-24mm/FA 100mm macro/35mm macro/50-135mm/10-17mm fisheye.

ahh yes sorry my bad, automatically thought I was looking under the 'pentax' section on FFordes, where in fact I was looking at 50-135mm lenses :facepalm: I am 41 today so automatically allowed to be a goon

The SDM has been upgraded in 2012 though...

I had a Nikon mount Tokina 50-135, while the optical design may have be the same (joint effort IIRC) the optical performace most certainly is not, the Tokina is flare monster, point it anywhere near a light source and you get the most wonderful lens flare you have ever seen but I did like the tripod mount

Presumably why Pentax used their own coating on the front element.

lens here, paid 628.50 delivered in the end from Stafford Cameras, all seems in order not sure what year it is but it looks pretty newish.. I am pretty happy.
