how to fix this?

Posted 22/05/2011 - 15:45 Link
Hi
took this shot, really pleased with it, but either my hand or the camera strap intruded into the frame.
How can I fix this? I tried using a clone brush in gimp but with poor results (lack of skill).

select an area of sky, from the opposite side of the image, slightly larger than the area you need to fix using the rectangular selection tool. (in your case copy the whole left side of the sky area....)

copy it paste it into a new layer. Then flip it horizontally, and move it over the the offending area. adjust brightness or color if needed.

Now blend the edges with a mask or eraser tool to soften the edges and blend it in.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

This one's dead easy The sky's more or less the same colour on the right so just sample the blue above the white cloud and paint brush in the right corner until it looks right

thanks for the suggestions, gave it a go with reversing the opposite sides sky, then smudging it in. not perfect but happy with it so far.

Good work man, not noticeable for the untrained eye (that's me LOL). Good job salvaging the photo.

Along the lines of what Don said but I would copy the entire image on to a new layer so you have a greater area of sky to work from.

1) Copy image to new layer
2) flip the image and add a layer mask
3) paint out all of the greenery on the layer upto the mountain ridge with a hard edged brush
4) with the softest edge brush you have paint out the dark part of the sky until your happy with it and it looks smooth
5) Flatten and save

Voila
Based on Photoshop but I am pretty certain you can do the same with GiMP
