Horse racing

Although I have two well-known horse racecourses nearby, Warwick and Stratford upon Avon, I have never been to a meeting, but it occurred that they would be good for photographic opportunities. I would like some dramatic shots of the race and jumps, from low level if possible, but realise that access is restricted as may be the angles of view. Also some shots of the winners' enclosure and things going on. Does anyone have experience they can pass on, best lenses to take and so on? I realise a tripod would be a no-no but how about a monopod for long telephoto? Are there restrictions on taking "professional" equipment?
