Wonder what's been going on - heard the noise and went out - came back in grabbed the camera and put the 18-135 on to see what I could get - not tried anything like this before.

first the original - taken on AV with ISO 200 f5.6 and 1/6000

And then I decided to crop to see what I could make out

Not perfect by any manner of means - I'll need to watch for vignetting in future - but this has let me see what I'm getting . Clearly I'd have been better with a tripod - but by that time the opportunity could well have been lost . The Tamron 18-250 would have probably been better too - but that was upstairs and again , but by the time I'd struggled up and got it and come down , put it on ........

And looking out of the window now, the clouds would have been very near black.

It's been an interesting experience - and I wasted no time over this taken the shot put through Aperture very quickly and well here's the result - and lessons learnt.

This was , as far as I can tell , over Castlemilk

We might have "shot" the same chopper!
It was hovering above my house so had a bit more time available to grab my camera and change the lens.
This is taken with a K30/DA*300.Comment Image

Interesting - thought Police Scotland has only 2 helicopters - certainly looks like the one that was in our area .

Certainly the longer lens would have been useful - but I really need to watch how much gear I'm carrying .

Wonder what was going on ?

I tried to find out what was going on about the one in my area but nothing did come up really, must have been much more than reporting a traffic jam or related issue as they kept hovering around and pretty low. (Well ...that helps certainly in getting some shots!) Also the fact the door at right side was open for a while and a person was clearly visible (on both images you can see a foot resting on the skid bar. Also specialised equipment was attached...

Very very strange - after I had got it the first time it went away and then came back to a different area - could have been between Toryglen and Rutherglen area and was circling and hovering there for about 15 mins . Unfortunately there was no chance to get another shot of it - wrong lens and housing and lots of trees and phone wires were getting in the way.

Indeed very strange, as you describe they must have covered quite a large area.

About the wrong lens at the wrong moment... I too missed quite a few opportunities lately so seriously consider to go for a second body to pair with the 300mm as my main interest is wildlife.
Just need to figure out what suits best..

Not only was it the wrong lens etc - but I could really have done with the CPL on it ! Mine was a real grab and get it as I couldn't see the chopper from inside the house so had to go into the yard first then come back in and grab it . I'd an 18-75 on it [ last time it was used was inside the Church so the short zoom and faster lens was what was needed then ]

Lots of lessons learned from my little effort - so that's not been a wasted effort

I keep a 55-300 lens on my k500 all the time, might be worth looking at or a 18-270 then you are ready for anything.
