Andrew

it's not clickeable and there seems to be another problem with it as well

Then click on the slide show.

I'm on the netbook so shan't comment on the photos from here

Not sure what went wrong, Techno. Worked last time I did this. But not this time. I'll have a look later.

Thanks Gwyn. You obviously sorted something out!
Best wishes,

Andrew

Interesting set again Andrew, now I can see them on the big screen, but somehow they seem a bit flat to me. Not only the conversion but also the composition. Not up to your usual high standards imho. Sorry.

As far as I recall I wasn't at Longleat but by the looks of the ladies at Heaven's Gate I could have been .

Thanks Gwyn, maybe the light was to blame! Compositionally they're a bit ordinary, I suppose. I was just drawn to these great lumps of stone with the odd markings. It's a wonderful spot!
Best wishes,

Andrew

I expect it as the light. Not good at this time of year for most of the day.

They do look interesting hunks of rock, and I quite understand why you wanted to photograph them. Certainly a challenge to get them right.

I would have had a go too, and would have probably made a right pig's ear of them, but as I said it weren't me at Heaven's Gate, sadly.

I can't blame the light. The composition simply wasn't an issue: there's no other way to shoot them! I was drawn to the bright, sharply carved stone against the dark foliage. I saw them in black and white as a set, which would work together. There's a kind of simplicity and solidity about them which I still like. Can't please all the people all of the time. Or some people any of the time!

Thanks for looking and commenting.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Andrew, that you are happy with them and like them is the most important thing.

That's just it: the light wasn't bad, it was good and at an effective angle, perhaps a bit behind the stones, perhaps a bit mid-dayish and steep. But no excuse.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Middayish is bad by definition. Early or late is what these stones needed. Long dark shadows to give character.

If you are determined to beat yourself up over it, then you are guilty of poor timing.

Andrew, the sculptures that have the strong tree shadows immediately behind could benefit from that harsh mid-day sun - you could turn the harshness of the high-contrast lighting to your advantage perhaps?

The others were a time-of-day issue (a bit difficult if just passing through!).
