As far as I recall I wasn't at Longleat but by the looks of the ladies at Heaven's Gate I could have been .

They do look interesting hunks of rock, and I quite understand why you wanted to photograph them. Certainly a challenge to get them right.
I would have had a go too, and would have probably made a right pig's ear of them, but as I said it weren't me at Heaven's Gate, sadly.

Bad light stopped play.

That's just it: the light wasn't bad, it was good and at an effective angle, perhaps a bit behind the stones, perhaps a bit mid-dayish and steep. But no excuse.
