What a great shot by Technoblurb. I had a go that night too. Got out the tripod and the lens that I bought with my last SLR [Pentax 80-320]. Shot of a dozen or so shots, adjusting the speed until I came up with this:-

Comment Image

ISO 200; Aperture 5.6; Shutter Speed 1/750; 320mm lens; Cropped.

Not so good, but recognisably the same object as Technoblurb's shot.
Comments please.

Nice one Jeff, your image is better than you think. I have compared your image to mine, the light on the moon is different, maybe the time of day, geographic location and the relationship of the sun to the moon possibly causing that yellow fringing on the right hand side, the angle of view is also different. I had a play with your image, added a little sharpening, adjusted the contrast to bring out the dark areas then converted it to black and white. This produced a more defined image although a little soft on the edges.

I'm not very familiar with this lens, does it normally produce soft images at its maximum length? If this is the case you could try reducing the focal distance slightly. Having said that, I'm no expert on lenses so please if someone knows better chip in!

Regards

Graham

Thanks for you comments, I'll have another go on the next clear night but I'm dead chuffed with what the K100 can do even in the hands of a newcomer. Can we get a look at what you did to it ?? Ive just got Iphoto just now so it would be good to see what you came up with ... Jeff

Jeff, I hope this helps, I spend ten minutes on this rough version, you will probably get a better result from the original. I think more work is needed on the top right hand quarter of the moon though.

Funny I was thinking of purchasing a 2x converter, but changed my mind after I asked about them on this site.

I was talking to a fanatical star watcher last week and he suggested that I take photos when the moon is in its last quarter cycle before the full moon, because the craters and mountains more defined,I will see if he is right, clear sky's willing.

Yep, the moon shows much more detail along the terminator. Much like photographing landscapes down here, morning or evening is best, the light at noon is a bit flat.
Getting there! Thanks to you guys

Pentax K10d, *istDL, Kit lens ( 18-55mm ), 50mm f1.7 lens, Tamron 70-300mm lens, Prinzflex 70-162 manual lens, Various old flashes.
