Howdy all

Is the sensor in the Ricoh GR / GRii the same as the sensor in the K5iis?

I've read slightly different things on this.

It has always been my understanding that it is basically the same sensor as the K5iis, but I can't find any links that prove it definitively.

It's generally believed to be the same sensor, which would make sense with the same company producing both cameras.

I would guess the low noise APSC Sony sensors used vary slightly from batch to batch as do the often used Fujitsu electronic components. I've read claims Sony supply slightly different specs to different customers too.

Then of course the Ricoh/Pentax designers tweak settings especially for jpeg in camera processing. RAW will be very similar throughout I'd also guess.

We live in a good era for all this technology with few poor examples. if our photos are lacking it's probably down to us don't you think rather than subtle changes in components widely used by makers?

Thanks for the responses, Lenny, Percy and Bill.

I've been just hugely impressed with the GR sensor. In DSLR land I jumped straight from the K5 to the K3... missing out the K5iis. I'm now thinking I missed something a bit special...

It is a really handy lightweight and good quality alternative to carrying around a DSLR, and can be a useful alternative to carrying and changing lenses on the DSLR.
But sad to say I just don't get to use mine enough
