Getting to grips with digital SLR

Posted 15/03/2010 - 01:49 Link

New to digital SLR, but hoping soon to follow in my Dadís footsteps as a Pentax man Ė when I can find out what I need!
Iíve used a wide variety of film cameras, and was reasonably competent in the darkroom (B&W).
But I had to give that up in 1985 when working abroad.
Now I have specific requirements in choosing an SLR, but finding out what will fit the bill hasnít proved too easy, so I will definitely be posting a few questions for help.

Hi John and welcome. I have only been here a very short while myself, but I assure you this is the place to ask questions. The response is fast from very good people. Glad also, for your own sake, to hear you have decided to join the Pentax fold. I look forward to seeing some samples of your work.

I gladly welcome C & C's. Being foggy minded they really help me learn.

Thanks for the warm greeting everyone.
Colin, Thanks, the web site has been twenty years in the making.
Gareth, I'm in sunny Griffithstown-by-the-Sea

Presently hoping for a chance on bretbysteve's K20D!

"Pontypool boy" - Ooooo that's a bit cruel
Actually I'm a foreigner (from the Midlands), and it's OK here.
Yes the 4042 is just down the road.

Anyway, I'm shortly to be a Pentax man in "fact" as well as theory, when my "excellent ++ condition" K20D arrives from SRS Microsystems
I think I was lucky because I couldn't find it on their site direct, I got to it via a Google shopping link.
Complete boxed set with kit lens plus an extra battery; it was a good price including VAT, and I'm registered, so even better.
Normally I'm guessing it wouldn't have been there for long.

Well Iíve got my K20D
SRS described it as "excellent ++ condition", and thatís an understatement.
But itís a bit of a puzzler.
I downloaded PhotoMe and the shutter count says 10005.
If it was only 5, I wouldnít have been surprised. But the file name of a shot just taken is IMGP9771.JPG, so this would suggest file memory has been on for most of its use and itís correct. Also, having two spare batteries with it would suggest a lot of use.

However, apart from just being able to detect on the mount that a lens has previously been put on, there isnít a single mark anywhere (and I went over it with x10 loupť!), nor any polishing from handling. Itís 100% mint; lens likewise (18-55 DA).
Leads are still packed never used, CDs also. Manual may have been read but not heavily.
First thoughts when I got it was, ďthis is new, bought as present and gave up when started to read the manualĒ.
I donít know; how can a camera have had so much use, but no physical signs of ever being used?

If it wasnít for only costing £449 (incl. VAT), Iíd have thought it had been re-bodied.
Anyway, Iím a very happy bunny.
