Optical condition is pretty good, there are a few dust specs visible when looking through (typical for age). Cosmetically it is fair to good - there are a few marks on the silver painted barrel. It does not have the original hood, but a modified Pentax PH-RBK 77 hood (for the current DA* 200 and 300 lenses) - which is actually deeper than the original and better sutied to this zoom length and the Power Zoom works fine.
Its performance at f2.8 isn't as good as the newer 70-200 (probably overall it won't be as strong), and I don't think it performs in strong lighting as well as it could. But stopped down a bit it exhibits the classic trademarks of the FA*'s (Bokeh, beautiful colours, etc). I've had some great photos from this lens, but I've also had some quite dissapointing ones. For me the extra stop (2.8 over 4) against the 60-250 isn't worth the extra cost and weight, and I suspect I will buy the 70-200 f4.0 when it is released (as this should be lighter still!).
Instead of putting masses of photos in this post I'll put a couple of sample, plus a Flickr Album link
Examples taken with this lens:
in the Flickr Album there are plenty of images taken with it and you'll see from the photos of the lens that I've photographed the areas on the barrel where the coating is marked and I've shown the AF window metal surround which has a mark/scratch on it and is lifting at either end very slightly. There is some minor dust inside (better than I'd expect for its age and there is one small coating mark on an inner element - I tried to photograph it but it doesn't really show - it is only visible if tilted in a certain direction against the light.
