Foliopic / website

A few years back I won a year's subscription to foliopic. Two edged sword, of course, as after the first year I had to pay for the thing. So, for a while, there was a krislockyearphotography.foliopic.com with a selection of my better photos (unlike my Ipernity account which hosts anything I want to repost elsewhere).

A little while ago I got an automated email saying my sub was due for renewal. I followed the link only to discover that Foliopic had closed down at the end of 2023 (but not their automated billing system, apparently... ). A bit annoying as I had put quite a bit of time and effort into building-up a series of pages about my cameras as well as the photo albums of my better work. TBH, however, I had very little feedback about the site and I suspect hardly anyone ever looked at it.

So the question is, should I bother creating a new website with another provider? Or should I just post here / Ipernity / Instagram? I've no illusions of being anything more than a moderately competent photographer so do I really need my own website, or is that just a sop to my ego? If I do decide to create a new website, any recommendations? Preferably something that won't get closed down after I have created the thing.

Thoughts on a (picture) postcard please.

K.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Hi Kris, apologies you received a reminder, that was a bit of an oversight, although the payment gateway on Foliopic had been deactivated, so it would have been impossible to renew.

Hi
It might be worth giving Flickr a look. You can post up to 1,000 images free of charge.

Thanks folks. I had a Flickr account but abandoned it for Ipernity when they made a horrible mess of it in 2013. It was used like my Ipernity account with a mixture of good, band and indifferent photos that I wanted to post elsewhere (such as here or the US site).

I was thinking more of a "showcase" site like my old Foliopic one.

Yup, I couldn't renew, obviously. Rather annoyed that I lost all the text that went with the camera photos, though. Some sort of emailed warning would have been nice! I didn't visit the site that often so anything there was missed.

Hi Kris,

We emailed the owners of the remaining sites with advanced notice of the closure of Foliopic, with the opportunity to download their files and data, which many did.

I’ll drop you an email tomorrow, so I can sort getting the data back to you.

Cheers,

Rick

I can recommend photodeck...link here.

Nice people to deal with, respond quickly to queries and their various pricing levels are competitive for what they offer.

Like other companies they offer a free trial...14 days though rather than a month.
