Firmware updates not working - what am I doing wrong?

The last successful firmware update I managed was some years ago with my K10d. Since then every time I have tried to update my cameras nothing happens. I have just tried my K5II (which is still on version 1-0) and my K1 and it's the same story - zilch!

The instructions seem straightforward enough and everyone else seems to manage, so plainly I'm doing something wrong.

I download the file, copy it to a newly formatted SD card (top directory), check that it has copied, put SD card into the camera, hold down menu button and turn camera on....and nothing! Just confirmation of the current version on the K5II and the normal 'on' screen on the K1.

I could ask SRS to do it for me next time I go there but I feel I really should be able to do this myself.

may i suggest looking on youtube it may be somthing that you are not doing
ie is it a reformated sd card with only the new updates on for that camera and not them both or any thing else on for that matter
if you have any thing else on there it wont work

Thanks Stu. I had not thought to look on You Tube. I found a Pentax Forums vid that showed me what I was doing wrong. I was transferring the whole of the downloaded file to the card instead of just the .bin file. I have just successfully updated the K5II.

Not true! It'll find the correct file amongst others. Just make sure there are no other Pentax bin files on the card.

Yup! K1 now also updated. Result!

i knowthis will sound daft firmware updates for the k1 already
just looked on the ricoh website there is none for the k3ii
that says somthing for the k3ii

As the K-3II is basically a slightly beefed up K-3 and was released after the last available firmware upgrade I doubt there will be any for the II unless they release one for the K-3 as well.

I'm not sure if they could have upgraded the K-3ii pixelshift technology to something more akin to that in the K-1 which allows for a slightly less static image, but even if it is possible I'm pretty sure that Pentax would never do something like that.

Pity, because other camera manufacturers offer improvements and not just updates and fixes.
