Five boats in the harbour at Staithes, North Yorkshire. The cliff in the background is Cowbar - dangerous because of random rockfalls. The local RNLI boathouse is on the quayside. Taken in late afternoon sunshine at 4 pm, late September.

The point of view shows the cliff in a most telling manner. Quite an impressive piece of geology!

The geology of this coast is impressive! Fossil ammonites and other Cretaceous and Jurassic fossils are common in the shales; jet was worked into jewellery at Whitby, just 10 miles away. Ironstone was mined and shipped from Port Mulgrave, the next village, until the 20th century and even today a major potash mine (for agriculture and industry) operates at Boulby, just over a mile from Staithes. It's a very picturesque village, attractive to artists since the late 19th century. There is still some fishing, but many of the cottages are now holiday homes.
