Ive just had the top shutter button fail on a shoot on my K5ii. It no longer wants to fire the shutter. Though the shutter will fire via a cable release.. Does anyone know if this is an expensive repair ? Or in this day and age should I just upgrade my camera..?

Or just buy a battery grip ?

Expensive repair, or not expensive - I am afraid it is necessary to sort it out as soon as only possible! But personally I don't think it is going to be expensive.

Does the back button shutter work? Have you double checked all the settings, including the menu options for the shutter button? I have been caught out when the shutter is set only to release when in focus.

As I understand it there's a small circuit board under the shutter button and that might be the cause of your woes. JPS would do the repair I'm sure and if you join PU Plus you'll get 20% discount on servicing. You download a form from I think the shop area of this site and send that with the equipment.
Best regards, John

Thanks John.. Yes I've used JPS before, a few years ago. Very good service.. I'll check with them in the morning for an estimate.

Is that before or after 20% discount?

Having said that, you could get a very nice replacement K-5 for about the same money.

Might be worth getting a quote from somewhere else. Do a Google search for 'camera repair centre' and make a few phone calls.

If it's working with the cable release (and I assume with the IR remote) you can still use it. You could even be an exclusive type, having a dedicated permanent tripod camera
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
