Hi,

Just spotted an old ad for a 43/1.9 on the WWW and the seller said, "the made in Japan version"...as if there are others made elsewhere?

...anyone have one not made in Japan?, and if so, where? and anyone have any clues when production switched, If indeed it did?

cheers Steve.M.

A lot of Limiteds are assembled in Vietnam along with most of the other lenses.

well, this one is bit puzzling to me too.
all DA ltds are assembled in Vietnam, FA31 and FA77 are now assembled in Vietnam now too. So with those two you will get sellers saying MIJ or AIV version. Most of the ones which are now sold new in shops will be AIV, unless shops have old stock. But! I have yet to see AIV FA43ltd! I haven't seen any news, rumours or anything to support the theory that FA43 is now AIV. Logic would say the new ones should be AIV but as I said, I have yet to see one....

I've seen one FA43Ltd assembled in Vietnam at a Montréal retailer store.

Now, go clean your glasses.

Ned's article is not going to stop speculation. Rollei had the Germany/Singapore scenario, Leica the Wetzlar/Canada and these days many manufacturers have factories all over the world.

There's no escaping it and unfortunately it means that there will be a price differential, even if there's no actual basis for it.

Could I play Devil's Advocate here? The reason people have been able to buy MIJ FA43s while the FA31 and FA77 are now AIV could be that the FA43 sells fewer copies than the other two (it certainly gets less hype, despite being a stellar lens) and consequently shops/distributors have yet to run out of their stocks of MIJ.

Actually, I rather think the FA43 sold more than the FA31 before the price hike. But when the price went through the roof it got stuck in retail inventory.
