Looks like the loophole has been closed now regarding the Channel Island importers not charging VAT, just looked at the 7 Day shop website for printer ink prices and they've gone from £8.99 to £12.75

Simon - I already posted a thread to the members about this. The changes in import regulations were enforced from 1st April, and it's HMRC clamping down on the loss of revenue caused by offshore companies selling cheaper goods to mainland Europe and UK. The loophole was that a buyer was technically exempt from paying VAT on goods imported from outside of the EU. Previously, the loophole allowed these goods to be VAT exempt because the purchase transaction was conducted with a supplier that did not have to register for VAT because they were outside The Community. The closure of this loophole has happened because HMRC successfully argued that since the transaction was not "complete", the purchase was being made by a UK (EU) resident with the intention of obtaining goods intended to be used primarily within the UK (EU) in a manner similar to purchasing goods from a local shop.

It's rather a complicated subject, and HMRC are even as we speak, not 100% certain how certain parts of the new regulations should be applied!

Anyway, here's the link:
