doubts about Tamron 17-50 F2.8 on K-5

Posted 01/06/2012 - 08:38 Link
Good morning all, I am having doubts about the sharpness of standard Tamron lens. I used to have a Pentax 17-50, but after 2 repairs for focusing issues I switched to the Tamron.

It seems my only other oprion is a Sigma. Any other suggestions?

TIA
Hendrik

The front element can get loose on the tamron, prise off the trim ring and check your screws.

I've not noticed an issue with mine but will pixel peek later.

Go back to a Pentax lens. Any early SDM issues should be OK by now. The 18-135mm is a superb alternative general purpose lens, using an almost silent DC motor.
Best regards, John

Thanks
the 18-35 is not F2.8. I think I'll blow the dust off my 17-70 f4 for some comparing. Any experiences with the Sigma?

I trust you have tried focus adjustment? My Tamron is as sharp as anything else I have, including primes. It is much sharper and faster than the 18-135; apples and oranges.

The Tamron 17-50 is a very sharp lens, sharper than the Pentax according to reviews, however I'm not sure that in real world use you can tell much difference in sharpness between the Sigma/Pentax/Tamron. Incredible value for money when compared to it's peers. Have never once had any issues with mine (2 years and counting).

My Tamron is crazily sharp! It's not without faults (e.g. mine tends to underexpose) but its sharpness is excellent.

Yup, as suggested make sure the AF Fine adjustment is set correctly before making any decisions on changing lenses

Not sure how the resize will affect this and whether it is of any use but guess which is the DAL35 and which is the Tamron 17-50. Not a brilliant comparison but I had the pics done already.

I can't say my Tamron 17-50 has been entirely without issues, but sharpness sure ain't one of them. The sharpness really shouldn't be an issue. Most of the reviews on the internet concur that this is one of the sharpest zooms around, and absolutely stellar for its price point.

If you think it's problematic send it back to Tamron to take a look at it (assuming it's still under warranty).

I had sharpness issues with my Tamron too. I had set it to -10, on my K7 and still no help. I had it serviced and it is now on -1 I think and very sharp, lovely wide open too.

I am i the opinion that the service should fix the issue. I'm hoping to upgrade to the K5 myself... so i hope no issues!!
