Do I really need it

I have a Pentax DA 55.300 ED AL DC WR, and I'm begining to wander if I really need it. I'm not really into wildlife or sports photograghy. I only really got it to extend my focal range. I'm thinking of replacing it, but what with ?. I'm mainly into lanscapes, but also anything quirky, might try a bit of street photograhy. I can't remember when I last used it. Most of my focal lengths are between the 16-75 range.

Sigma 10.20
Sigma 17.50
Pentax 18.135
Pentax 55.300
Tamron SP90 Macro

I’ve seen plenty of beautiful landscape shots taken in that range of focal lengths, that being said I haven’t been too successful with that technique myself so I know where you’re coming from.

The most obvious item I can see would be a fast 50mm prime. Something with f/1.4 can still be found for pretty cheap, especially in MF.

I have a soft spot for the pentax (and similar) 35mm f/2 lenses for street photography on an APS-C DSLR. One of the various Limited primes could also be very nice option.

I have a SMC A-1.7 50mm and the M version, but can only use manual focus on my K3ii. If I do get a 50mm it will have to be auto focus.

For street photography I would suggest the Pentax 35mm f2.8 Limited Macro lens. Very compact but gives superb results and readily available second hand. With the K5 you get the equivalent of just over 50mm full frame view for natural street shots.

Ah sorry, hadn’t picked on your 50mm. An AF Version might be handy sometimes but not exactly essential.

It is most definitely possible to take landscapes at 300mm. The following was taken at 300mm with the first (non-WR) version of very same 55-300mm lens that you are thinking you might not need. You do need it. It just requires thinking about and seeing landscapes in a different way. And, of course, it is quite possible to take landscapes at 120mm, 207mm, 284mm and any other focal length that the 55-300mm is capable of.

This thread encouraged me to try and use my 55-300mm a bit more for landscapes, here’s the first couple of efforts. Until recently I didn’t have a tele zoom in that range, usually I only a had standard zoom up to 50mm (or 70mm) and my tele zoom was 135-400mm. The 55-300mm is so flexible I think it’ll get a lot of use.

With some practice and judicious use, the Pentax 10-17 fisheye can give superb scenery as well as distinct results in street photography. However, overuse of the fisheye effect can make somebody "sea sick".

Another vote for the fisheye!!
I use the 17mm end for landscapes and the 10mm end for street and architecture.
