Do I need K-5 firmware update 1.02?

I want to update my K-5s firmware.

I have downloaded the firmware v1.16.

My camera has firmware 1.01.

This is what the readme file says:
===========================================================================
PENTAX K-5 Firmware Updating to Version 1.16
===========================================================================

* Firmware is the software that runs inside digital cameras.

Updatable models
K-5 digital SLR cameras running Firmware Ver. 1.00/1.02/1.03/1.10/1.11/1.12/1.13/1.14/1.15

As you can see 1.01 is not included in this list of updatable models.
Where can I get firmware 1.02?

The latest version is 1.16 and it can be found in the link below, which also details the changes made in all firmware versions. I don't think there's any need to upgrade to 1.02 before further upgrading to 1.16. Normally only the most recent version is made available and others are removed to make sure only the newest version is installed.

It's usually a good idea to always have the latest firmware installed to avoid any potential compatibility problems with items such as lenses, teleconverters etc and also to fix any minor bugs which have been identified.

Looking at the list of changes, the most important ones are for improved reliability of recording to SDXC cards and for improved low-light AF.

As Jonathan says, there is no need to look for 1.02 as the latest firmware includes all previous improvements so just flash 1.16

My reading of the OP is that of concern because v 1.01 (that is in her camera now) doesn't appear on the list of models that may be updated. Putting 1.02 in there is being queried simply as a potential workaround from the initial problem.
It's a good question - that hasn't been specifically answered yet, other than by the advisability of updating as a matter of course.

Can I still update to the most recent from v1.01 (which, alone, doesn't appear in the instructions) ?

Normally, the latest version will update all the previous versions without any problem, all previous updates having been included in it. However, to be absolutely sure in the light of a version not being mentioned, an enquiry to JPS would perhaps be the absolutely safest way to go.

Why not give them a ring and ask?

I think you're looking at the K-5 firmware update page. You don't want that, you want this:
http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/k-5_2_s.html

I don't think you could easily install K-5 firmware on a K-5iis, but if you force it it might not bode well! However double check which camera you have before installing the appropriate update for it as there isn't a K-5s. It'll be either a K-5, K5ii or K-5iis.

Thanks to davidwozhere, johnriley, and JAK for making the effort to understand the question.

and yes, JAK -- I see I was unclear. The camera is a K-5. I attempted to be "conversational" and messed up by failing to include the apostrophe between the "K-5" and the possessive, "s". Any way to edit the post to make it clearer for anyone searching the forum(s) for a similar issue?

johnriley says "...an enquiry to JPS would perhaps be the absolutely safest way to go. Why not give them a ring and ask? "

I'm totally not into bricking my camera with a firmware upgrade after RTFM and ignoring the instructions, BUT, I'm also a total newb here (and I live on the west coast of Canada) -- who/what are JPS, and how do I find them?

Thanks in advance!

The K-5 update page is http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/k-5_s.html and mentions v1.01 so not sure what the problem is.

If older versions were required to update to a current version then they too would be available to download as well.

Surely JPS are not appropriate for a Canadian resident? And posting to the UK for just a firmware update would be ridiculous.

If the OP isn't confident to do the update I feel sure any decent local camera shop would help out.

Quite right, I wasn't suggesting posting, just phoning, but I think it does go to show that it's useful to put a location with the user name. Especially as we are now gathering in more worldwide members.

Don't they answer e-mails? It's not like it is a difficult question!

Thank you. I have contacted JPS, via their website contact form. I'll let you know if they get back to me.

I get the feeling you didn't understand my earlier posts in this thread. Worrying about which version you have on the camera here is really a non issue. If however you're worrying about potential issues there shouldn't be any if you follow the instructions, particularly ensuring the battery is fully charged beforehand.

But it is! I've previously linked to the page where it shows it and I'll repeat the link for you:
http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/k-5_s.html
It clearly includes v1.01 so can only presume you looked at the K-5ii/K-5iis page which is for a different camera. Why not just go ahead and update it if you want the latest firmware?

If you don't feel able take it to a local camera shop but they'll probably make a charge to provide the service for something you can fairly easily do yourself.
