You could do worse than look at an LG IPS236 or IPS231P. IPS techology on a budget (and, in actual fact, LG make the panels for a lot of more expensive brands). The IPS231 also pivots to portrait configuration if you tend to work that way.

Good choice Hamish...i've been looking at these for a while. Still not took the plunge yet though.

Thanks everyone, Hamish I was looking at the LG IPS235V as they have it in Scan (www.scan.co.uk). I live close to scan and can collect to save on delivery, and also its handy if there's any problem and I need to return. I assume the 235 is the previous model to the 236, it looks very similar, I didn't realise LG made panels for other brands. Col55555ine I'd love the dell 24" as I like the 16:10 aspect ratio, its a bit more than I can spend at the moment, may be tempted to wait until I can afford one, maybe there be tax reductions in the budget

I have an AOC E2343F which is an LED backlit model, very thin and with a very impressive contrast range. It's so good I bought another for my son. I work all day for a software company that has all types of monitors and my AOC is better than any of them. Processing pics is a pleasure with this monitor as every detail is visible. £115 PC World.
P.S. AOC may not be well known over here but are the world's second largest monitor / panel manufacturer, after Samsung. you can clearly buy a better monitor by spending a lot of money, but for £115 it is stupendous.
BTW, 2ms or 5ms response time will make absolutely no difference unless you are a hard-core gamer.

Mcpieman, 235 certainly looks very similar. The 231 was a bit more utilitarian; more height/swivel/pivot range (satisfiying office H&S requirements as much as anything, I guess), but exactly the same panel as the 236. I looked at AOC, Dell, NEC and so on, but settled on the LG and spent the balance on a Spyder Express for calibration.
Looks pretty good from where I'm sitting .
If I had to choose again I'd probably go the same road (your mileage may vary etc), but, to be fair, I haven't looked at prices of the various options recently.
