I wonder if those that are convinced of the slowness of Pentax AF compared with other brands', have done any comparisons, not only of the speed of the AF, but also its accuracy.
There was an interesting post a few months ago at pentaxforums.com, which I read occasionally, where someone had actually done this.
I can't remember the details, but the conclusion was that although Brand X (Canon, ISTR) was quicker to claim focus, the accuracy wasn't all that good in the kind of circumstances that Pentax AF is supposedly not good.
I don't know whether those results were reliable, but it does seem strange that the naysayers tend to bang on about speed, but not accuracy as well.
All that aside, I have to suspect, that if Pentax AF in good light isn't good enough for weddings and portraits, there are technique problems somewhere.

That may well be so. All that aside, I have to suspect, that if Pentax AF in good light isn't good enough for weddings and portraits, there are technique problems somewhere.
I haven't found any problems with Pentax AF performance in any kind of light. It locks on quickly and accurately. I do use the centre point only, which makes life much easier.
For macro work AF is basically useless though and manual focus is far superior.

I think Petekd is being his usual provocative self by not replying to a question that has been asked of him several times in this thread alone, and really, who cares what brand he wll use in the future? If it's not Pentax, he'll be wishing that it was. This is a guy who sold a camera because the images it produced were not sharp enough, then, within a few days, bought another camera of the same model. Why, was another camera of the same model more sharp? I don't think so.
Unfortunately for Pete his peers seem to have convinced him that a camera with a name beginning with C or N is better than the one he knows, and professes to love. Confused?, you bet he is.
Hasta pronto Petekd.

I use the centre point too, and for most things, as you say, it's more reliable.I haven't found any problems with Pentax AF performance in any kind of light. It locks on quickly and accurately. I do use the centre point only, which makes life much easier.
For fast-moving subjects, though, where it's difficult to keep the subject in the centre region, it isn't very reliable at all, not unreasonably, of course.
I've also found taking pictures at dance events where there are bright lights off-centre, and darkish subjects moving about, very hit and miss, so much so that I've resorted to MF.
I imagine faster lenses would improve the low-light performance, given that wide open while the AF is doing whatever it does, there's more light getting in than with a slow lens.

You know, MF works fantastically well! My 645 and my occasionally borrowed 5x4 dont have auto focus and by some amazing piece of luck every picture is pin sharp, they must be really brilliant cameras.

The focusing was not to clever it still hunted a bit even in the bright lights at focus. I did play with a few other brands and found focusing a lot faster.
No doubt it will prove a big hit but I dont think Ill be buying one yet till the price drops considerably
Cheers Pete
