Building your own set of lenses in Pentax World

There's a good point there. Too many lenses just gives rise to indecision and confusion.

It's refreshing to carry a simplified kit and rediscover the necessity to make do.

Very few images need an exotic array of lenses, although of course there are times when specific optics are necessary.
Best regards, John

I'm with you on that point too....
18-55, 16-45, 12-24, 16-50, is all too much....

Pentax needs to drop the 18-55, make the 16-45 the basic "KIt" lens (imagine the reviews in the media when the kit lens on the Pentax holds it's own against the competitions "Pro" lenses!).

Drop the 12-24, take a smidge off the price of the 16-50.

entry buyers choose the 18-250 or 16-45. simple.

advaned buyers, 16-50 everybody wins, esp Pentax's reputation for having the finest kit lenses in the industry!

When the bodies prices- drop (due to aging specs), then the price for the total kit remains the same (as todays), and when new bodies become available you'll want to buy one, cause you already got great glass.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

I currently use a Sigma 18-125 which was a kit lens that came with my Ist DS, it's done me well as an all-rounder. Also, a Sigma 70-300 Macro APO (the old version) which came with an MZ-7 that I bought a few years ago, again its done me well although I believe the current version ha a much smoother zoom than my one.
I'm looking at upgrading to the Pentax 16-45 and Sigma 100-300 f4, not sure what I'm going to use in between though, there's quite a large gap between 45 and 100!

My current kit will be a blast from the past for most of you guys: I'm still 100% film (MZ-10, ME-Super, MX).

  • * SMC-A 28mm f:2.8
    * SMC-M 35mm f:2.8
    * SMC-M 50mm f:1.4
    * SMC-M 50mm f:1.7
    * SMC-M 135mm f:3.5
    * SMC-M 200mm f:4

Plus the kit zooms of my MZ-10:
  • * SMC-F 35-80mm f:4-5.6
    * SMC-F 100-300mm f:45-5.6

And one Ricoh lens (Riconar 55mm f:2.2) that I sometimes use with macro extensions - not much point selling it, considering what it's worth.

The two F zooms are quite slow, but it's nice to have AF sometimes - you just have to feed them some faster film, Fuji Pro400H being my favourite. The 100-300mm sometimes feel like a shoter zoom with a teleconverter: so be it, it was pretty cheap for that kind of focal length.

I'm quite happy with my primes, even though I have doubts about the 28mm - I might very well replace it by a 24mm (if you're going to have image deformation, why not play with it) and use the 35mm for regular wide-angle shoots (architecture etc.). The 50 mm f:1.4 is just amazing; I haven't tried the f:1.7 yet - might replace the Ricoh for macro purposes.

So that's me: one happy film camper!

Meyer Optik Orestegor 300mm F4 (M42)
Meyer Optik Oreston 50mm F1.8 (M42)
Meyer Optik Lydith 30mm F2.8 (M42)
Jupiter 200mm F4 (M42)
Porst 55mm F1.2 (K)

A lot of the lenses on that list don't see much use and the kit that I usually carry is:

Pentax 10-17 Fisheye
Sigma 10-20 F4.5-5.6
Pentax 16-45 F4
Tokina 80-200 F8 or Sigma 70-300 APO (depending how light I want my kit)
Cosina 100mm F3.5 Macro
Pentax FA 50mm F1.7

Along with a 2x TC I find that kit gives me an appropriate lens in the vast majority of situations. Quite often I'll go out with a kit made up of just a few manual focus primes lenses, or sometimes just a single prime lens, to force me to be a little more creative.

Thought I might join in the fun...

AF Primes
F 28 2.8
FA 35 2.0
F 50 1.5
105 2.8 EX Macro

AF zooms
DA 16-45
DA 18-250
FA 28-105 3.2-4.5 (the current one - silver)
DA 50-200
Cosina 19-35
Sigma Apo Macro Super 70-300
Sigma Apo 170-500

MF Primes (I cut back on these a bit a few months back)
K 17 fisheye
M 28 2.8 (type 2)
M 50 1.7
A 50 2.8 Macro

MF zooms
A 35-70 3.5-4.5

I also have a 3rd party bellows and a Sigma 1.4x converter - amd the Sigam AML auxiliary lens that goes on the front of the 70-300 making it 1:1 at 300mm (but just try keeping it still...)

What do I use?
Digiltally:

Up till now if I go out with just 1 lens it has been the 16-45. That will become the 18-250 most times now

If I go with my small camera bag I add the 50-200 (or perhaps the 70-300 if I think I will need the reach), one of the macro lenses and one of the AF primes. Plus 360FGZ and filters

Rucksack - very much depends on destination but it gives room for the 170-500

AF film
One lens 28-105 (great lens!)
Small bag - add 19-35, 70-200 and a macro (probably the 105). Might drop the 19-35 for a prime at times

MF film - it is usually in as an 'auxiliary' with B&W film in. The 50 1.7 only comes off occasionally - usually for the K17
