Well found myself a mint 16-45mm with filter off the "other" Pentax forum for 130 delivered so that is hopefully on its way as I type.

Thanks for the input.

I had a 24-135mm F2.8-4 and while I liked it as a general purpose walk-about lens on a film camera it proved not to be anything like wide enough on a DSLR so I eventually sold it.

My walk-about lens now is the 16-45 F4 which I've found to be excellent. Yes it's somewhat short at the long end however I find that less of a problem than having the lack of width at the wide end. Often these days I pair it with a 70-300 APO Sigma and while that does entail a far amount of lens swapping I've not found that to be problematic because using a slingshot bag makes access to lenses fast.

16-45mm arrived this morning complete with instructions, lens hood and a filter.Came in a DA 55-300mm box :shock.
The seller did tell me his girlfriend had thrown the box away so he would find something suitable but still, I wouldn't have put it in another lens box especially if I still had the lens.

Looks rather good actually, seems nice and sharp and focuses surprisingly close.
The widest lens I had up until this was the kit 18-55mm but that has never been on my camera, I bought it on this forum as a lens to include when I sell the body.

Could anyone tell me why the hood has a little slide out bit ?

you obviously haven't seen the 55-300 yet, I will be very surprised if anyone who owns one ever sells it lol.

The slide out bit is so you can get to polarisers to rotate them without having to take the hood off.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

That's so you can adjust a fitted polarising filter. Coincidentally, two minutes before reading this post I mounted a brand new B+W MRC CP on my 16-45mm. However, I bought a 77mm size (so I would not need to buy another) with a 67-77mm step-up ring. This means the Pentax hood will not be able to fit, so I screwed a three-position collapsible rubber hood to the front of the CP. That way it can stay on the filter at all times, even when I transfer it to another camera.

The little Pentax window is cute, but I can't help thinking the "slide out bit" would get lost in short order.
