Resize yourself.
You can then:
Selectively crop images - maintain the 4:3 ratio;
Choose the level of compression / quality you want;
Choose the method of resizing - PS & PSE have different options for enlarge/reduce/sharpen &c.
It also means the processor in the frame has less to do and does not need to do it everytime the image is shown.

I've just bought an 800x600 8" digital photo frame for my techno-phobic mother (anyone else and I would've got a cheap android tablet instead).
Is there any advantage in putting photos on it higher resolution than 800x600?
Or should I re-size all the photo to 800x600 and save space on SD card?
Haven't received it yet, so not able to test it.
