I'm looking for a straight forward introduction. Does anyone know of resources?

Basically I want to know which will autofocus and which won't, which will fit straight on a K-5 and which need mounts, and which are good for a beginner like me to look out for and where to look to get them a reasonable prices.

So not asking too much then!

Actually, I think I've just found the answers to most of my questions:

M42 lenses need an adapter. As the dSLR has no means to control the aperture on M42 lenses, life is easiest if they have an auto/manual switch; set to manual and you can control the aperture on the lens.

Be careful with lenses with the infamous Ricoh pin (PK/R); do research before mounting them on the camera as you might have a hard time getting some of them off.

Some K-mount lenses (e.g. Vivitar 70-210) have a large shield to protect the aperture lever. This will prevent them from mounting on a dSLR (and, if I'm not mistaken, SLRs that support powerzoom); a small surgery makes them usable.

Lenses for other camera systems (Canon, Nikon etc) can be used with adapters; you might however loose functionality (AF lens is no longer AF etc); personally I don't bother about them.

Hope this helps.
