Hi

I have a seagate expansion external harddrive that I use to back up my images. I am finding it confusing doing incremental backups from PSE. It keeps asking for a file name it was backed up to but presents me with a lis of files I have never heard of? Can anyonye please suggest an eaiser way of doing incremental back ups. I mean would it be possible just to drag and drop my new folders acorss from PSE to the harddrive? Is it possible to install somwe device that would back up automatically when I plugged the harddrive into my lap top? Thanks in anticipation.

Download the free back-up software from Seagate and do it that way.

Mine are set to back-up at the weekend, but you can set it up do back-up as little or as much as you like..

You could try the freeware version of Syncback from here: http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html

It will back up to any logical drive/directory and also to a directory on a web server too. Just install, configure and forget.

It works very well for me, backing up to an external Seagate USB drive and, for important stuff, to a directory on my hosting too.

This is the starting point link

You need to know which external drive you have and then select the appropriate download.

Thanks again Hyram. I have used the link but I am afraid I still dont understand where to go from there? I have a Seagate Expansion 1tb but none of the headings on the page makes any sense to me. They are talking about Freeagent and then desk or go etc.. and can't see where to go to download what I require.

The Seagate Expansion models don't come with any software, since they expect people to buy them for use as expansion drives.

I would try downloading the Freeagent software.

The main thing is to ensure that you download the correct version for your operating system e.g. for XP or for Windows 7 etc.

I mentioned in another post that I'm pretty impressed with the Clickfree backup system. I have one of their 500GB units, but they also manufacture a device that deploys their software with any make of hard disk. There's one here: link

I haven't dealt with this company, but the product is obviously available elsewhere and could be one solution to your problem.

This looks good, but can you tell me if it will just back up ones images and then do incremental back up thereafter. Or does it back up all files of all types even if not required?

Cheers

It will back everything up the first time around and then just make incremental backups. By default, it backs up almost all file types (and you can specify any oddball, non-standard extensions that you use). You can also exclude any extensions you do not want copied.

Would it be possible just to get it to back my photos up and nothing else

If you just keep your photographs on an expansion drive, then you can set up the Seagate software to just back-up that drive.

With the Clickfree, you just tick or untick boxes to tell it what file types to back up. If you just want to back up photos, tick the "Photos" box and untick the rest, such as "Text" or "Spreadsheet".

Under photos, you can also tell it what file types to back up (including PEF). In most cases, you'd want to back up all your photos but the option is there to be more specific if you want.

The files are stored in the same folder structure as they are on the computer, so they're easy to find. If you ever have to restore the files, it will put them back in the same folders where they were found originally.

The model I have can back up from as many as 10 computers and keep the files separate. I imagine it's the same with the gizmo designed to work with your own drive.

One advantage I find with this system is that the files remain in their native format and you can view them as you would normally. Other backup systems I've used compress the data and you've no idea if will be restored properly until you actually have to do it.

As I get older, I feel less inclined to fiddle around with technical things than I have been in the past. With this device, you just plug it in and the technology (developed by Crazy Canucks like Yves) does the rest. Simple.

... Having said, it looks like the model I linked to a few of posts back may not work with Windows 7. It's probably best to check with the company itself, which seems to be advertising a different (later) model: link
