Any Lee Filters (SW150 System) Experts out there.....

I have a bit of a mix of filter systems at present (Lee 100 and 150) and am trying to consolidate down to a single system and am running into difficulty understanding something. I have a Lee SW150 System adaptor https://www.wexphotovideo.com/lee-sw150-system-adapter-1536782/ but I haven't bought a SW150 holder (MkI or MkII) yet - I thought I understood what this adapter does but the Lee Filters site and Googling hasn't provided a proper explanation (or maybe I'm a bit too dense to get it ) - the adaptor claims to allow the use of Lee Filter Rings (100 system) on the SW-150 holder - but I cannot determine whether it will only work with the MkI holder or the MkII as well.

I suspect this adaptor pre-dates the SW-150 Screw-in lens adaptors which connect the filter ring of a lens directly to the SW-150 MkII holder, and any previous information that may have been on the Lee site appears to have been removed?

If this makes sense any assistance would be appreciated

Sorry John, got mixed up on this a bit. You can use 150 filter system going down on smaller lenses but not the 100 going up. By using a screw in adapter with sizes from 72 up to 105mm but at £80 each not cheap. There are 6 diameter sizes, look them up on the WEX Webb site “SW150 screw in adapters”

Thanks Stewart, I haven't explained myself well but I see what you are describing - the individual screw in adaptors that fit the lens directly on the filter thread and attach into the SW150 II holder at the other end. This is the new/current system (and the one that Lee promote - unsurprisingly at £80 a pop) to allow a larger number of lenses access to the 150mm filter system.

My adaptor has a receptor for Lee filter rings (from the 100mm system) on the one side - just like the back of the foundation holder - and a circular tube on the other side (presumably like the one on the newer filter adaptors - perhaps this photo shows it better: Comment Image

This allows it to connect to the SW150 holder (or I believe it does) - what I don't know is whether it will only connect to the MkI holder or the MkII as well ?

When I say I want to consolidate - I realise that I will only be using the 150 filters and holder but can make use of some of my 100 system filter rings

I can only think to contact Lee Filters directly. Having bought the SW150 system for the one lens, the f2.8 15-30, and an adaptor for others, I have found it quite bulky and struggled to find a mid-sized bag with enough depth, and wonder whether I would have been better off just with the SW100 system. By contrast I have a cheapo Cokin 82mm system which does for several lenses and fits unobtrusively.

Cheers Rob - Yes, I could contact Lee Filters, just thought I'd see what nuggets of wisdom and experience would appear first The 150 system is bulky, but the 100 system is too - so if I can use the 150's on everything (relatively cheaply) then I think that's the way to go (for me)!

I see you're about to celebrate a milestone Rob - One post away from Two Thousand

Just in case it's of use to anyone - I did contact Lee Filters at the end of last week and received this reply this morning.....

"...Thank you for the email. The SW adaptor you have mentioned in the web link will fit both the MKI and MKII SW150 holders. In order for this adaptor to work it must be inserted into the holder front the front which means if you have the MKII holder the light shield will need to be removed.

The Light shield is essential for Stopper use so if you are wishing to use these filters the only option is the individual SW150 screw in adaptors, available in sizes 105mm to 72mm.

Please let me know if I can assist further..."

An efficient and explanatory response

Interesting subject this, I've been mulling over filters etc., which one, which system and so on for a while now.

I've seen the Wine Country Camera system ( https://www.winecountry.camera/ ) coughed blood at the price to which one must add postage / customs etc. However, it does look good and has great reviews.

The second one I've looked at is Revoring, ( https://handyfilters.com/product-category/revoring/ ) Could be an answer to the requirement of having numerous filters of different sizes / rid yourself of step-up / down rings.

A tad confusing to put it mildly. However, knowing John and the others who know their way around the world photographic, I have no doubt they'll have some thoughts they'll be able to share.

Be well, stay well every one.
