AF-200FG Flash Pics

Ned Bunnell has some shots of the new flash on his K10D on his blog:

Looks a bit of a lump to me (for a 'small' flash), no focus assist lamp, but basic flash compensation controls. No indication of pricing though.

Firstly Hi everyone,

I have Lurked for a few days having just bought a K10D.

This flash looks neat, has anyone seen a UK price for this yet?

Also can it be triggered off camera by another flash, I was looking at the AF360FGZ but having just bought the K10D a cheaper and smaller option appealed. I have a AF240Z that could point out of the way and trigger it.

In particular I have been looking at following the Lighting 102 at http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ and was wondering if the AF200FG would see me through for now.

Any Advice would be appreciated.

Nope.

AF360-FGZ is what you want for the K10D. It's not that big. The weight will be similar anyway with four AA cells. Here's a quick feature list of what the AF360 has that the 200 doesn't:
* Wireless P-TTL
* Wireless Manual flash
* Dumb slave trigger (even for triggering off Canon bodies! )
* High speed sync for shooting all the way up to 1/2000s
* Bounce
* AF assist illuminator

And I've seen the AF360 for £160 at SRS Microsystem
(I have the AF360 and AF540)

Thanks MattMatic, I was in danger of suffering a case of corner cutting there I think.

I had no idea that flashes could sync that fast now, wow.

Am I right that the wireless is through the pop-up flash rather than IR?

And final benefit is I can buy the 360 now so off to the srs website I think.

They do it by issuing a burst of high speed flash pulses. It reduces the distance by a half, but is absolutely fab for out-door fill in and keeping shallow DoF

Yes, it's via the pop-up flash. A K10D custom option will allow the choice of "Pop-up contributes to the exposure or not". (Mine's on "not".

BTW, the only minor, minor niggle is that you can't do wireless high speed sync (which you could on the *ist-D). But TBH, it's not such a big deal. I find a £30 brolley + bracket on a tripod with the AF360 or AF540 produces a great lighting combination

Thanks for all the advice, I got my AF360 today from SRS who were very helpfull and sent it overnight.

Its got a few more options than my old AF240T so think I might need to read the manual but the dozen test shots look good

Talking of stands I have a lighting stand and brolly, anything I should look out for in getting a bracket/mount for the flash to go with them?
