A walk to Aberlady Beach

We went for a walk to the beach at Aberlady at the weekend. When we got there the tide was way out, enabling me to see at first hand the old mini subs from the war for the first time.

One of the mini subs. I have two shots here from slightly different perspective and would be glad to hear people's preference. I think they both have their own qualities which is making it difficult for me to choose which one to print.

Wow, those are fantastic! I'd never heard of the subs, but will definitely try and arrange a visit now!!!

Excellent Swan shot too!

Edit: PS I think I prefer the 1st sub shot as you can see how small it is, and I like the footprints behind it. I love the sparkles off the water in both shots!

I like these. Terrific light on the wet sand.

I'm troubled by the apparently curved horizon in the last two though. Is it a real distortion?

thanks for you comments thoughton.... you know, i hadn't even noticed the footprints!!! i was too busy looking at the water sparkles and ripples in the sand!

On the "View back towards Edinburgh" shot, you can just see the subs out on the beach away out towards the water line in the centre of the pic. That shows just how low a tide you need to get good access to them. Beware the tide!!! it comes in fast.

ChrisA... so am i! I had noticed it when i was processing the RAW files...

Anyone know if there's any way i can remove the distortion using CS4?

Would love to get a better lens, but money is very tight.

I prefer the first sub shot too, whilst I like the sun through the steel ribs of the second, the higher horizon of the first gives a much greater depth to the image. Lovely colours too.

I think all of these would be much better in mono

Well, you can in CS3 (Filter > Distort > Lens correction) so I'm sure you can in CS4.

Oh dear here comes Mr curmudgeon - aren't the clouds blown out in both mini sub shots? Who wants the clouds anyway in the first one?

Lovely shots. I'm off to the in-laws this weekend at berwick on tweed, so 40 miles or so south of aberlady. The skies on that stretch of coast are always fantastic - a real feeling of space. Hoping for some good conditions.

What powerful colours. I'd love to see those subs...shame it's all so far north! I like the first landscape, too. As for the blown clouds, well it's so difficult to retain detail in highlights with the dynamic range you were faced with.

Well done.

The first of the two sub shots for me. When you are doing the conversion from RAW see if you can "recover" the blown highlights in the clouds a bit, or perhaps use a "digital" neutral density filter to sort out the blown highlights.

Best wishes, Kris.

This is one of the subs from the other side.

I'll have a go at the blown highlights in the clouds on the first two at a later date before i print them. It's good to get all the input though. It was difficult to capture though, as i was shooting more or less directly into the sun and there's a HUGE range of tonal difference in the subject.
