with an illegal number plate?

Yeah, known as 'the bacon slicer', iirc.

had a later version, lovely bike . number plate not illegal at the time it was produced which i think because of that they are allowed, same as having no seat belts in cars that were produced before the legislation came in to effect, bonnet mascots were another thing that got done away with but still see them on classic cars
It's age probably explains the lack of tax, too.
SteveH!
Some people call me 'strange'.
I prefer 'unconventional'.
But I'm willing to compromise and accept 'eccentric'.
Those front number plates were considered potentially dangerous and were no longer required as from August 1975. however there was no legal requirement to remove them if already fitted.

Personally, I don't know anything about motorbikes except that you can fall off easily (which I did when I was about 10).
They look like machines to drool over (perhaps?)
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
