I like the idea behind this Barrie. Think the whites on the petals look a bit muddy and need lifting.

Thanks Gareth. I think you're right, I had trouble with the white balance, I suspect due to the lights, and tried to locally select the flowers to sort it out. more work needed I think. It shows up more on here than it does on my monitor

I'd try a fractional flash pulse on a longer exposure. It should bring the petals up without adding light to the bowl area. Flash placement will determine the right approach.Worth trying Barrie as this has potential.

Best regards

Barrie, I hope you don't mind, had a quick play in PS,

A quick selection with the pen tool, feather then a levels adjustment on the whites. took no more than 90 seconds, hope it looks ok on here.

Interesting. Two different takes on the same picture. In the first, the (i.e. my) eye is drawn to the blobs and swirls at the bottom, in the second it's drawn to the flowers at the top. Both are equally valid for me and I like both.

But the title of the thread suggests that the response to the second is what was intended. Perhaps there are times when it's best to dispense with a title and let the viewer decide. Then take the adulation even if it's not for the reason you intended...

A difficult balance to achieve indeed, Barrie. I think your second take works better overall than the first, but I might accent the lights in the vase a slight bit... up to individual taste here, I guess.
