Hello everyone,

I have been registered a while, but just getting round to posting my first topic.

Whilst doing a wedding recently for friends, I realised that my Pentax 50-200 was not up to the quality I expect. I have an excellent Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and am looking for equivalent medium telephoto zoom to match with it. Sigma, Tamron 70-200 f2.8 models preferred. I have a budget of up to 300 and will consider reasonable offers for good quality used lenses. I have struggled for ages to find this kind of kit on the internet.

Will collect in person if within reasonable distance.

As you already seem to prefer these, I'd look for a Sigma/Tamron 70-200 F2.8 zoom if I were you - either here or elsewhere. Even the old ones are good (my 2000'ish Sigma is a good 'un.)
K-3 II, K-3 and K-30 (now running the Hacked K-50 f/w, so it thinks it is one of those ), & some Sigma and Pentax lenses (and a lot of old 35mm gear!) - and now a K-70 from SRS

There's a chance you may be able to get a DA* 50-135mm lens for as low as 350.

If you're looking to stick with the K-3 (and not move to FF) then there really is no better option than that.

The 70-200 lenses are a bit too long when used on crop sensor cameras.

On reflection, you could be correct.

The DA* 50-135mm lens looks a good option, but I am concerned with the SDM motor malfunctioning for some people, as posted in Pentax Forums comments section.

We do of course tend to hear about all the SDM failures, but recently there have not been so many and of course we don't hear about the ones that don't fail. I would ask SRS how many actually do get returned compared to sales and I'd suspect the answer may be very few.
Best regards, John

I have a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 DG OS I would consider selling but it would be well outside of your budget.

If the SDM on a 50-135mm is a problem for you then perhaps you could look for a used sigma 50-150mm.
No equipment list here but thanks for taking an interest. My Flickr

Also if you ever get an SDM failure then you can just convert the lens to run on screwdrive. I've done it for three lenses so far and it really works a treat. It's a bit noisier (but not as much as you'd expect) but it's more responsive and also just as accurate.

If have just picked up a DA* 50-135 from a forum member and must say that the initial results are very good indeed. I have a DA* 16-50 too as the WR element of these lenses is important to me.

I have decided to look for a Sigma 50-150 to complement my 17-50, which I am happy with. The longer range will be useful.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments. I have subscribed to shall we say 'less than friendly' forums before.
