Weekly #890 - Street Furniture Competition
Title | Weekly #890 - Street Furniture |

Judge | davidwozhere | Closing Date | 27/10/2024 |
Description | Our streets are full of objects that are both useful and (probably) useless so you will have no problem finding subjects. John set this theme several years ago and it was my first success in these competitions so I offer it again. Archived or new entries must have been taken with a Pentax camera or accepted clone. |

So acting like a crazy idiot in a busy high street has its rewards... Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I'd have a winner here. Thank you!
Your analysis is right - there was access from both sides. I was on one side holding the camera inside the bin and contorting myself to see its screen. It actually took two visits to a bin to spot this view. Walking up the street, I took shots from outside a bin looking through both holes. It was only while walking back that I realised there was both a better bin and a better shot if I didn't mind looking a total idiot (not for the first time, though...). Thankfully, nobody in uniform asked me what the heck I was doing. In fact, everyone seemed to give me a wide berth. I wonder why???

Thanks for the competition David and your well considered comments. Well done to the top three:three: Lobbyman, Kasper and MHOL190246. The excellent subject certainly attracted a wide variety of interesting interpretations.

Excellent winning shot, top notch creativity and a worthy winner, Congrats Lubbyman. And extended to Kasperbergholt and MHOL190246. And echo the comments of Flan "The host Davidwozhere also needs a mention for the, no holds barred critique". Super challenge, Thanks Davidwozhere!

I was very conscious of the need to get the result out on time and, being exceedingly short of time at the time I simply let my perceptions govern my typing. Perhaps 'time' ought to have been a topic? My apologies for rubbing any fur the wrong way. And to Spad, I did wonder about the matter of light. Had the street lamp been emphasised more, perhaps. Can the light trails of a car whizzing by be considered 'furniture'?

Thank you for the second place - and even more so the insights, thoughts & impressions of my contribution, you saw some things I hadn't thought about / done consciously.
It was a pleasure reading your thoughts on the other entries too.
And congrats to the winner!

Slap in the middle of England
The vertical format really squeezes the viewer's gaze along that street. Only then do you realize that the place is absolutely spotless! I wish that could be said of other places.

That's a really big bit of street furniture. I love the way it is reflected in the roof of the foreground car but a few moment's wait would have avoided that pesky person getting out of their car at just the wrong moment.
By the light of the street by Spad
Super night picture (what else do you expect from Spad?). It is perfectly exposed and immediately grabs the attention but I am unsure of the 'street furniture' content?
Meatpacking District at Night by kasperbergholt
It's hard not to examine this one closely, if only to try and figure out what is going on and why. The sharpest focus is the window at top middle, followed by the figures. The huge amount of foreground that contains the bulk of the subject matter is deliberately out of focus, giving it an aura of mystery with a huge block of concrete of indeterminate purpose. I have to admit to being fascinated by it.
Al Fresco by Simonmac
Three salient items (excluding the 'Bus Stop' markings). The bench, canted to keep it level on the steep slope; the girl with the striking orange hair and an apple. Which grabs you? …. The apple, without question. It's amazing how such a tiny object can take over an entire frame. The 'furniture' comes a poor second!
Oblivious by davidtrout
Sorry David. I accept the deckchairs to be street furniture but this is all about the people sitting in them. …. Great observation, nevertheless!
Postbox by SSF1957
This one has a similar problem as far as the topic goes. It's a marvellous black and white that capitalizes on the contrasts within the frame but the postbox is entirely incidental. …. Don't lose the shot though - it will be a phenomenal contender in any 'mono' themed contest.

And it's clear why not too. On the other hand, the benches fail to take center stage compared with the bright shop window and even its reflection in the slab on the left. Also, the big written name within a very large expanse of white demands to considered as the theme of the image.

Indeed it is a different take on the theme but even though it is bright red and yellow the lamp post, slap in the middle commands attention instead.
The View From The Bin by Lubbyman
I am guessing that there is access to this bin from both sides. I've seen the result of someone holding their camera inside the slot to peer at the contents but never a view like this, as if the photographer was inside it - you were on the other side of it? Yes? Noticing the potential is good. Having the skill and creativity to pull this one off is great (in my view).
