Weekly #738 - Public Transport Competition

Public Transport seems to have brought in a few entries, which is great, and a big thank you to everyone who has taken part.

Not in service – decay is a very attractive subject to cover, and this old train is no exception. Lots of lovely rust!

Fuzzy vehicle – I am a little mystified as to how this is public transport, but I can certainly see that the Fuzz or maybe fuzzy logic is behind the thinking here. Perhaps better suited to a street photography competition?

Ferry – This is interesting, combining an iconic ferry with an accomplished view of it. The small boat is a bit washed out, but the ferry itself is splendidly done.

Sparkly New Trams..... - Blue is just gorgeous with digital cameras and two pristine and new trams in blue reproduce perfectly. A very eye catching shot!

Trolleybus dreaming – This brings back memories of travelling on trolleybuses when I was very young. Not for long though as they were all taken away. That lovely whirring noise.....And in the 1970s we still had the Corona man calling every Friday evening and we would buy our week's supplies of Corona soft drinks. Happy days to dream about.....

School bus and tree – A well crafted reportage shot of some public transport that has ceased to be.....

Public transport – Fair enough, good subject, nicely presented. Is it just me or has the vertical dimension become stretched? The people look too tall and thin to me.

Metro crossing.... - That's clever, showing some real movement in the train and yet keeping just enough detail to make the subject easily identifyable. The technical quality is also impeccable.

The number two – Lots of detail and interest make the image. I pose the question wouldn't it have been great to actually show what the people are looking at? Unless of course that would have meant some other unfortunate consequence. The photographer was there, so knew what choices to make.

Dampflok – When we are actually on a steam train an unfortunate consequence is that we can't see the train, unless the curve up ahead allows it. The photographer here has taken full advantage of that short timespan when an image could be made.

Heading south at Berwick – Good positioning of the train. The only pity is that the light is not particularly good, but when we are there we have to make the most of what we find.

London on the move – Another clever image that conveys the feeling of a city in motion so very well. It is surprising how little is needed to give the clue that this has been a London bus passing by.

Sadly.... - These are incredible looking beasts and the composition is spot on. The image could really do with being a bit sharper and having more punch to the colour, or if not that then maybe presenting it in monochrome instead?

Crossing the river – A familiar scene, well presented and well timed. Good technique, good colour and good sharpness.

Waiting to get back – An interesting image that perhaps needs a bit more contrast and bite. The ship is actually pointing downhill slightly, so rotating the image conter-clockwise will sort that out. Not much in it, but water horizons are best kept straight.

*** - Great content, just lacking slightly in sharpness. I personally don't mind the noise from high ISOs, as long as that noise is crisp, like a film with crisp grain structure.

Light Pacific Class.... - This one hits the spot with vibrant colour and lots of steam toi add interest and give a sense that something is happening. There is just enough of the background to provide context.

The Flying Scotsman – A great subject and a great positioning in the frame, just let down a bit by technical details. More sharpness, more depth of field and more colour saturation could perhaps transform the picture.

Transport for the masses – A great subject, again let down by technicalities. IMHO this should be sharp from front to back and the exposure should be adjusted to give more detail to the trains. The subject is static, so it needs attention to detail to make the shot as great as its potential.

Cycle race – Great subject matter, with some distraction from over-exposed areas in the background. I'm not so sure that this wouldn't be better suited to a street photography competition as I'm struggling to fit it into a concept of public transport?

And there we have it, so down to the winners now. It would be much appreciated if the winner could set the next competition as soon as possible as then everybody gets a fair chance to find time to sort out an entry.

And that lucky winner is MackemGeorge with that dramatic Light Pacific Class. Well done!

Well done , it’s a cracking photo

Thank you John for stepping in to set and judge this week's competition, otherwise I might not have come up with a winner, I feel privileged to be pick as top slot, congratulations to David and David in second and third places. The British Rail green, decent bit of weather and enormous effort by the engine of pulling the train from a standing start out of Grossmont Station helped greatly in the construction of this shot, all I had to do was be in the right place to take it.

I've photographed many trains on the NYMR from that same spot over the years George...its an ideal location get action shots.
