Weekly #715- Architecture Competition

Morning!

Coming to you on a dreary Bank Holiday Monday....

Thank you all so much for entering. A collection of lovely photographs that have made judging difficult. Just as it should be.

My Runner Up is jofford with a Fan of Architecture
My Third Place is nigelk with St Olaves Priory

Let's take a look:

Victorian Crescent Weston Super Mare- tyronet2000
A shame to see this. A common theme everywhere. Despite the dilapidation there is something proud about those columns and the pineapples made me smile. Nice viewpoint leading off and a good use of black and white.

Haddon Hall- Perspicador
Just looked this up- Derbyshire. Looks like a splendid place. It is a nice capture but the Hall doesn't leap out at me. It may have been difficult to get a closer view but it would merit closer inspection.

The Roosevelt Bridge in Washington DC- MHOL190246
That Eagle places this structure in its country of origin straight away. It is a lovely detail and says a lot. It would have been good if the lighting had raked the feature to lift it from its surrounding. That may not have been possible.

St Olaves Priory- NigelK
I was drawn into this. Look at that ceiling! The pillars. It looks old. Had to look this up to. Great Yarmouth and 800 years old. Wow. Again, the black and white treatment brings out the detail. Good shot.

Really Old Egyptian Architecture- vic cross
What to say? Never been. I am jealous! Nice detail and viewpoint. Although I keep going from the Sphinx to the Pyramid and back again. The horizon also seems slightly off.

St Roch's Windmill- wozfromcov
What a beautiful scene, yet it seems so lonely. I like windmill shots and this a good one. It just doesn't leap out at me- not the photographer's fault...just how I see things. I again looked this up, St Roch is one of the Patron Saints of Dogs- read why- it's a lovely story.

Red Door- davidtrout
A wonderful cathedral. I like this a lot. I love the glimpse inside: it is almost voyeuristic. The detail is good. The only thing that distracts me and again, this not the fault of the photographer, is that the red door itself pulls all of my attention.

A Fan of Architecture- jofford
If there were a first place for the pun in the title....! A striking image and the king of modern development that is like marmite. I love marmite. Well seen and there are some lovely tones going on. May I ask what the building is? I noted the location.

Lincoln Imp- PRYorkshire
What a fine fellow. This is a good detail and the use of the radial filter certainly focuses the attention. Sadly, and this may be my eyes, it seems a little soft. A slow shutter speed had to be used with a long focal length but the photographer has done well in the circumstances.

Nan Hua Buddist Temple- Noelcmn
Another shot from across the world. A magnificent structure duly well recorded. Like all the shots here it made judging difficult as I have no criticism, it just doesn't quite hit me.

University Limerick- Flan
I like this. There is a lot going on. Tones, angles, reflections. It may be the accumulation of those things that just didn't quite do it for me. I would say perhaps try a mono conversion as that's what I mostly do. However, we all see things differently...thank goodness!

Cafe- retsoor
Alf Resco. I assume that is deliberate- it made me chortle. I would happily pop in here- my kind of place. Doesn't quite do it for me as it is a little chaotic.

Thank you all again. I can only apologise if this post has appeared later than folk may be used to. I sit and look and write down comments on each shot before typing them up. I do this the day following the deadline as I am not wont to comment just after midnight. I also only look at your entries after the deadline so that I am less likely to harbour a favourite over the week.

Congrats to tyronet2000, it’s richly textured conveying a faded grandeur and worthy winner. Thanks simonac for the roundup of all the photos ,including my own entry itwas a last minute afternoon shot so was rushed but I enjoyed entering the competition and well done to the runners up.

Well done to 1st 2nd & 3rd. I had a little go at Simon for not getting comments sooner but I was just pulling his leg. I hope he forgives me.

Thank you for runner up Simon; really happy with this and your comments. The building, which is in South Shields in Tyne and Wear, is called 'The Word.' It is an award winning building that was built as a national centre for the written word. I think my pun in the image title is probably an offence against the building's purpose. I cannot imagine why there isn't a national centre for the spoken word in Tyne and Wear; it would be very enriching for the quality of the English language as a whole. Congratulations to Tyronet, a worthy winner. I am always happy to cede first place to a fellow Northumbrian. I am an exile now in Derbyshire so Tyronet probably knows more about the building than me.

Congratulations to Stan for a worthy 1st place and to the 2nd and 3rd places. Yes I agree that the Lincoln Imp is not as sharp as I would like, I tried to rework a 6MP photo that had a high ISO and slow shutter speed due to the light levels in the cathedral. I need to revisit with the K70. A good competition with excellent entries.

John. I also am an exile. I'm from South Shields. (Although I was actually born in Newcastle) I left Shields in 1969 when I worked for Churchill at Blaydon. I haven't been back for quite a long time. Where is that building at? If you know Shields well then you'll know where I lived. At the top of Lawe Rd looking out over the entrance to the Tyne. CHEERS Vic.

Im afraid I don't know Shields well. I lived in North Northumberland and my wife is from Sunderland, so we've only had fleeting visits. It looks like a very vibrant place these days. The Word building is near the harbour. There were quite a few interesting buildings for photographers in that vicinity.
