Weekly #698 - Reflection on 2020 Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 03/01/2021
Judge: Johnwnjr

This is available to a very wide selection of interpretation, and can be any photo from your archive or taken in the final days of 2020. It doesn't have to be a photo of a reflection, but it can be. Usual rules apply. Your photo should reflect what has happened to us in 2020 or personally.

Lockdown Feast by Perspicador. I felt that the individual poses by the various species of bird on the feeder could have been better. A case of not enough shots taken, and the next could have been better?

A Berwick Swan Reflected in a Pool by MHOL 190246. Your comment about the virus turning the whole world upside down suits the shot well. Even though it is a good reflection I feel that it needs to be sharper.

Lockdown Garden Bird Photography by PRYorkshire. Excellent shot of the Robin. It is just as I have seen Robins come to you in a hedgerow on a walk and pose, then move on to another near position. You have to be quick to find them in the viewfinder and catch a shot of them.

Farewell Message by Nigelk is very well seen, taken and emotional, reflecting the huge number of deaths during 2020, which sadly are still continuing at too fast a rate.

Hand Gel & Mask by Glyn M would be a possible winner of this competition if only it had been taken during 2020. Unfortunately the date registered when photographed is 02/01/2021 so according the stated object date of 2020 stated, I sadly have to disregard this entry.

Pool Opening Day by Reconrad2 seems a happy time, but a confusing photograph as you might expect with many children splashing about in the water.

River Derwent by Paulb531 is a lovely black and white reflection photographed on a walk which so many people have been doing. This must have been right at the beginning of the Lockdown as the date is 20/01/2020.

Yyuryyubiouryy4me by JAK is an owl with impact and super detail. How it is related to Reflection on 2020 I am not quite sure as there are no notes and I don’t understand the title. It however is an excellent photograph. I apologise for my ignorance on the title.

Reflection (on life during Covid) by Noelcmn is a good idea, unfortunately taken before 2020 (05/07/2019) so I am disregarding this entry.

Thank you for all your entries and this is my opinion for the results mainly based on the standard of photography:-
1st Farewell Message by Nigelk
2nd Derwent Water by Paulb531
3rd YYURYYUBIOURYY4ME by JAK

Thanks for the comp and 3rd spot. Well done to Nigel and Paul for their placements too.
As to the title, I'm, not sure whether you'd call it a brain teaser or an acronym, but it stands for:
Too Wise You Are, Too Wise You Be, I See You Are Too Wise for Me.
I'd always presumed everyone knew that! And of course owls are renowned for being wise, perhaps they'd have had the pandemic sorted by now if they'd been asked!
I first encountered the teaser when it was entered in my autograph book at junior school.

This is very lame. Of all the put-downs I have had on here this really does take the biscuit. You are not commenting on the photo I have taken - which was in semi-darkness - it is all about the non-existent photos I have not taken and have not been submitted, as you hope for anything submitted other than the one I did submit!

Yes, very lame.

I feel that I have to say how disappointed I am about having my image disqualified. I felt that the 2020 shooting limit was not well defined. Also given that the competition did not start until Tuesday meant that anyone wanting to shoot an image for the competition was given less than three days. From my direction this unfairly discriminated against those who like to shoot something specific for the competition. My memory is not as good as it used to be but I believe that part of the discussions we had when these competitions, and the old fortnightly competition that preceded the current monthly, were set up recommended that the period of the competition had to encompass a weekend.

I felt my image properly represented a good reflection of 2020 and would have been the same if I had shot it two days earlier.

I am not disputing the results. I am a firm believer that the judge is free to choose whatever images he or she like. In any case as some someone who has not been allowed to see their grandchildren this Christmas found that Nigel’s wining image brought tears to my eyes.

I am though disputing the disqualification as not being in the spirit of our weekly competitions.

I feel somewhat depressed to have been disqualified and it may be a while before I feel I can participate again in these competitions which probably does not help improve the low levels of entries we now seem to attract compared to when they first started.

Yyuryyubiouryy4me

I think a variation on yyuryyubicuryy4me, which would be "too wise you are too wise you be, I see you are two wise for me". I'm not sure what the o stands for in the version used.

I'm sorry to read of the disappointment of two contributers. I understand that we all put a lot of effort into our images and this investment is precious. Having said that, we all have said something about judging from time to time I'm sure. Ask at any camera club. I'm a judge as well and I doubt that I please all the people all the time. But at the end of the day, the judge is the judge and we might all be in that position from time to time.
Best regards, John

I have set and judged many competitions on this site for my local club and local U3A. I have always tried to attract the maximum number of entries by setting subjects with a broad and well defined interpretation along with encouraging reviews and fair judging.

This particular competition seems to have failed in some of these respects.

Thanks for the second place. I think as an oldie the lock-down hasn't affected me as much as some - I have stunning views on my doorstep. I took the picture before lock-down to be fair but I could have submitted something similar during. As long as there are walks to be done and beauty to be captured we still have things that are worthwhile.

Regards

Paul

It was not my intention to upset anyone, and I am truly sorry to have done so. I had my chance to comment and I am not going to add anymore. Kind regards to you all. John Ruffell.

Like Glyn, I wish to raise an objection to being disqualified, unless my understanding of the English language is faulty. Nowhere does it state that images must be taken in 2020, there is a hint and even an expectation, but no direct statement to that effect. It does state that images can be taken from your archives. Reflecting what has happened in 2020 opens it up to a variety of interpretations such as I've submitted (we all have had to reflect on life and changes, albeit forced upon us). Not that I think my image would have won, simplyno competition with that evocative, gut wrenching documentary shot of Nigel. In that connection, a hearty congrats to you Nigel, a worthy winner indeed. And extended to Paulb531 and JAK. And thanks to our Judge for the C&C's. an emotionally charged subject for sure!
