Weekly #676 - A Little Bit of Red Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 12/07/2020
Judge: Johnwnjr

A small spot of red shows up remarkably well. Any subject matter will do as long as there is a little bit of red somewhere and the photo has good lighting and composition.

A Little bit of Red

Lady in Red by Nigelk – Dramatic shot with the lady well wrapped up in red coat, on what appears to be a cold grey day on Felixstowe beach. Figure well placed looking into the scene, interesting taken with a 2 second exposure possibly to calm the sea.

Tunnel Vision by David Trout – Interpretation of the idea of the competition spot on! Interesting that viewing this in thumbnail size no red can be seen. Then enlarge it, and Wow!

MA Cherie by Perspicador – Good quality image against very suitable out of focus background. Cherry might have been better less centrally placed, and black bruise marks covered up.

Tulips by Tyronet - ‘A little splash of colour’ Interesting placement of the red in the frame with a pleasing scene. Ideal for the title of the competition. Despite the red one, the grey central group attract the viewer more.

A Splash of Red in a cornfield by JAK – Rather a large splash of red, perhaps a little too much for the idea of this competition, but a pleasant enough scene.

Odd Man Out by Aitch 53 – This simple image shows here super detail in the cloth and pens. It is just right for this competition.

My Little Friend by Vic Cross – Meets the requirements of the competition but is not sharp on the lower part of the robin which distracts from an otherwise good shot.

Butterfly by emleyman – Technically exceptionally well taken showing every detail of the butterfly, and there are two tiny bits of red too. What more can one say! It is certainly up there with the best.

She Wants to be Free by John Riley – May have been specially taken for the competition and is a very clever enactment, but the red frame is a little too much red than I was anticipating.

Penstemon by PRYorkshire – The amount of red is just OK, but the rest of the image seems rather unclear. Penstemon is usually upstanding and maybe better photographed from the side.

Luncheon Red and Black! By drofmit – Marvellous detail on the spider. Difficult to know what the wrapped-up red prey was. Left hand background, although out of focus, detracts.

Bends and Curves by Noelcmn – Very clever patten picture and I like the arrangement of the wavy lines to fit the frame. Latin name given too.

Time to go Home by Retsoor – A very late entry after 9.30pm on the 12th! But splendid shot overall with the amount of red good but very central.

Contenders Summary and Results in order of entering: 3rd ‘Lady in Red’ for its composition, 1st ‘Tunnel Vision’ for the most original idea for a Little Bit of Red, 2nd ‘Odd Man Out’ for its quality, Highly commended ‘Butterfly’ for its technical perfection, Commended ‘Bends & Curves’ for being so original but a little more red than the winner. Also commended ‘Time to go home’. So the winner is ‘Tunnel Vison’ by David Trout. Thank you all very much for entering.

Thank you for the silver.

The daft thing is, I spent two or three hours working on several 'A Little Bit of Red' ideas I came up with, including updates of the picture I entered, and just couldn't produce anything that satisfied me. Trying too hard I suppose!
SteveH!

Some people call me 'strange'.
I prefer 'unconventional'.
But I'm willing to compromise and accept 'eccentric'.

John, many thanks for the win and for setting and judging the competition. My congratulations to Aitch 53 for 2nd and Nigel for 3rd, not forgetting Noel for his HC.
I've been out all day so I'll produce a new set subject for this week's competition later this evening.
