Weekly #653 - Shot in winter Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 26/01/2020
Judge: SteveF

opportunities for shooting are often limited at this time of year, so let's see what you've shot in winter - the subject can be a seasonal event, a winter landscape, the weather, WHY.

As promised, here are my purely subjective comments.

Thanks to those who entered, you are all to be commended for getting out there and taking pictures in winter! I was impressed generally by the control of exposure demonstrated in the entries. Congratulations all round.

Overall result:
1st – Frosty Moss - davidwozhere
2nd – Whither shall I wander - drofmit
3rd = Moscow - kingvar
3rd = Winter Sunset - retsoor

Robin by Perspicador.
A handsome chap indeed, but the depth of field is too narrow I feel and it’s a shame his feet were cropped off. Perhaps you were constrained by the long lens.

The pass is open by vic cross.
Good wintery feel – made me shiver despite the sunshine! Great control of exposure for what is essentially a grab shot. I just felt the composition lacked something.

Moscow by kingvar
An excellent atmospheric night shot of one of my favourite cities. Good technique shown. Reminded me that it’s too long since I was there.

Whither shall I wander by Perspicador
Good spot. Like how you retained the detail in the snow. I think I might have preferred a tighter crop, as there’s perhaps a bit too much dead space.

Frosty Moss by davidwozhere
Super shot. Great technique demonstrated – exposure, focus and composition spot on, placement of the plane of focus, lovely bokeh, combination of colours. An easy pick for first place.

Icefingers by JAK
Good effort, just didn’t quite succeed in my view. Lacks a bit of punch.

Icemaiden by johnriley
Clearly both originals are good shots, however, the combination of the two is not to my taste unfortunately. I do appreciate the quality of the work in Photoshop though.

Winter Sunset by retsoor
I was surprised not to see more of this type of shot; certainly locally we’ve had some spectacular sunsets recently. Lovely colours here and yet another member demonstrating excellent control of exposure.

February Snow by EricD1306
Well done for getting out there, it looks pretty cold. The idea of using the wheel tracks as leading lines is sound, but I think the composition could have been improved with a slightly different viewpoint.

Eland in Winter by Noelcmn
Lovely light in this and good exposure control. The explanation was helpful, thanks. The subject is too central in the composition I feel.

My feet are cold! by ken2390
Excellent exposure control, retaining good detail in both highlights and shadows. The composition looks like it was limited to some degree by your position in the room.
