Weekly #581 - Horizon Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 02/09/2018
Judge: stephen-s

This weeks theme is Horizon - hopefully the theme is quite self explanatory and is open to interpretation. So I am hopeful of receiving some interesting interpretations of the theme to broaden my horizons or the more traditional interpretation featuring the Horizon as a strong element of the composition...

Sorry for the delay my comments and thoughts are below:

Cardigan Bay – Perspicador
Lovely colour in this image and the reflection of the setting sun in the wet sand lightens the foreground to provide some interest. Not sure the position of the groyne in the foreground helps the composition but that said, it would probably need a revisit at different time of year to do something with it. Oh and the highlight on the horizon really works…

North Sea Horizon – davidtrout
A very much cooler pallet in this image, had it not been for the little bit of foreground interest this image is almost entirely empty apart from obviously the horizon… I felt this image worked well as the stillness of the water really emphasises the feeling of a large empty space.

There's a hard rain coming – RobL
I can’t argue with this images title, almost reaching for my waterproofs. I enjoyed the drama captured in this image, the contrast in the light on the sea and the sky is fantastic. Well seen and shot.

Gazing at the horizon as the sun goes down – retsoor
As with the first image the colour and light in this image is fantastic. I particularly liked the positioning of the person sitting on the bench in the foreground to the left to balance the light of the setting sun and you have even managed to get the horizon bang on eye level… well composed….

The Isles of Eigg and Muck from Arisaig – JAK
The light and atmosphere captured in this image is wonderful, I really need to go back to the NW of Scotland… The subject in this image is clearly the dramatic hills on the horizon, but the sense of scale is set by the inclusion of a couple of hardy walkers on the beach.

Peaceful Horizons – johnriley
Slightly less drama in this Scottish landscape, you have captured some nice colour in the foreground and the two headlands lead the eye through the image to the gap in the Horizon nicely. Add to that the unusually peaceful calm of the sea that makes me want to explore and I find myself wondering what is in the gap in the horizon…

Multiple horizons – davidwozhere
Thought this was a very original image, I did enjoy the sense of perspective and the framing of the distant horizon using the (horizon in the foreground?) gate. Could not help thinking it may have worked better if the top rail of the gate had not cut through the line of the trees, but I am not sure if you could have got that angle.

Land, Sea, Sky – Simonmac
A very simple composition that is all about the contrast and textures in the sand sea and sky… I liked the light in the sky on the horizon and that it mirrored the surf in the foreground on the beach.

Heathland Horizon – GlynM
Quite an interesting landscape, the variety in the trees and the spacing made me wonder if they are remnants of a previous forest… The light on the shrubs in the foreground mirrors the light on the trees on the horizon nicely, so well seen.

Crossing The Minch – smudge
A dramatic horizon that is some way off judging by the small boat on its way over to it. I also enjoyed the light that is emphasises the less dramatic horizon on the right. Also the dark clouds at the top of the image balance the sea in the foreground nicely.

Sunrise – Noelcmn
Some nice light captured in this image – it’s always worth getting up early for a sunrise. The ships on the horizon add some interest to the image, just when you think you have seen them all you spot another, obviously Port Elizabeth is a busy one…

So thanks and well done to all for submitting images, as I mentioned it was tough to judge this week. On to the places then…

Stunning winning image, evokes a great deal of envy, both for the location and the image, and leaves me wanting to add the spot to the bucket list. Congrats Restoor, worthy winner in a high quality contest. Congrats extended too to Smudge, RobL for their podium places and not forgetting the HC's JAK and Davidtrout! Wonderful challenge, a boon to the aesthetics and wunderlust! Thanks Stpehen-s for the challenge and CC's, as always appreciated.
