Weekly #568 - Sunshine Competition
Title | Weekly #568 - Sunshine |

Description | Given the day I'm setting this is a Bank Holiday most prefer to see the sun out rather than have yet another gloomy day. So this weeks subject is Sunshine. If you're taking something specially I'm sure I don't have to say to take precautions not to cook your camera sensor or blind yourself by setting your camera to f/22 and 1/8000s shutter speed and pointing your camera at the sun as you will cook your sensor and should you use the viewfinder to frame and focus then you will cook your retinas too. So i've said it anyhow! Indeed the sun doesn't have to be included in the picture at all. Potential pitfalls of 'sunshine' photos are burnt out highlights and shadows without detail so don't be afraid of trying something using high dynamic range (HDR) techniques, be it at the time of taking or in post processing. Basically any scene taken while the sun is shining would be eligible so please don't take any risks. The usual rules apply - images to be shot on Pentax or related cameras only and the winner will be expected to set up and judge next week's competition. Entries can be taken specially or from your archive. The competition closes midnight Sunday 3rd June UK time. Good luck with your entries. I hope the sun shines on you! |

Excellent winning shot, and when I reviewed all the images this morning, I said to myself that one stands a chance of winning, and so it proved. Congrats Stan, simply beautiful! And extended to Davidwozhere and Perspicador. and not forgetting my fellow HC's Dromfit, Paulb531, and Vic Cross. I'll happily take the HC, amid such a wonderful array of cracking shots Thank you JAK, for an excellent challenge, comments and critiques. Another learning curve.

Thanks John.... a really fun comp.... congrats to the winner.... I was looking at one of Stan's pictures on FaceMuncher about three hours ago!
Congrats, also to the other podia....
You asked about the white artefacts at the bottom.... that was the sun on the underside of the cloud... shining through the treetops.
When I tried a crop, the top part looked wierd... so I left them there.

My thoughts, others will no doubt think differently such is the nature of photography:-
Out of Blue Skies - Perspicador
A good opening entry. A diagonal composition with the sunlight outlining the sharply focussed birds which is really effective against the contrasting blue sky. Both technically and compositionally this looks to me to be far superior to your earlier efforts. Well done.
Grafham Water - walkeja
The exif data tells us this was taken at at 7.45pm but the overhead lighting and resulting shadows suggests otherwise and looks to be around mid-day. It looks to be a really nice peaceful location where the trees would offer a respite to sit and eat one's picnic lunch (but probably not at 7.45pm.) There's a nice sparkle on the water and the contrast well handled. The photo actually grows on me the more I look at it!
Light Leak - tyronet2000
Whether that effect is by design or accident I've no idea but it's produced a really interesting image. The two-tone colour scheme is effetive. Then there's the 'S' curve of the water course taking you through the picture. All in all an interesting photo containing several patterns. Intriguing great shot.
Ringside Seat - John Riley
I'd like to creep up and roll the log over (or perhaps the wake from the racing boats might do that for me!) What a good fun image. I do feel the mallard's camouflage is causing them to merge into the background so they don't really stand out. Was Well seen and captured non the less and at least the birds are enjoying the sunshine!
Early Morning Sunshine - paulb531
Terrific shadow play here. By chance (presumably) the flying bird's wing follows the curve of the chair's back and that is where the real picture is here. But it doesn't quite work due to the presence of the other bird, not that you could help that. Maybe some judicious PP'ing to eliminate the LH bird and you'd end up with a really special shot. What I also reckon it needs is the bottom right hand corner shadow cropping off to concentrate on the birds. The unrelated shadows are distracting from an otherwise very well captured scene.
Capturing The Light - Nigelk
That's really good and rather than just capture the same scene everyone else is taking you've included foreground interest. The simple composition and monochromatic colour works well.
Sunshine - davidwozhere
The subject idea is good here and it nearly comes off. In this instance I feel this is a bit over cluttered with too many daffs which distract from the sharper main bloom. I was wondering if a wider aperture to decrease the depth of field would help isolate that main bloom but f5.6 is already pretty wide for the focal length.
The sunshine of my life sinc 1957 - vic cross
Your sideways lady! The exif includes an instruction to orientate the photo by 270 degrees and the site has kindly obliged!
The portrait is very well captured with the tonal range spot on. I take it you used something to reflect some light back. Your 'subject' is obviously at ease and looking very natural, I can only presume you were both very pleased with the result, I would have been too.
Sunshine! - Mag07
A lovely airy feeling to this with the sun highlighting the figures making them almost translucent in places. One oddity is that either the lady looks as though she is sitting on the chap's head or he hasn't got one! I was also wondering whether the top of the photo would be better if the image was cropped down to about the level of the buildings given the sky area is burnt out. Doing that should ephasize the features of the figures which is surely the real subject here.
Band of gold - davidtrout
A subdued sunset. This would make a good candidate for one of those wall art poster pictures as it is such a very relaxing scene. The tone is truly lovely. I get the feeling that the image might be sloping a bit to the left as presented?
Sunshine overload - wozfromcov
Sunshine overload.... you said it! The colours seem very saturated but are non the worse for it. I think I detect the hallmark of a bit of HDR going on and it's provided for a very striking and unusual image. Whether it's a bit overdone might be a matter of debate. I suspect some will love this and others hate it as with HDR shots always causing a split opinion. Either way the image is very eye catching... and sunny!
See how it sparkles in the sun - ken2390
A photo of contrasts, half a stony beach, half a sparkling sea. The idea here was good however the point of focus seems to have left the sea out of focus which doesn't feel quite right to me in a scene of this nature which (to me) needs to sharp across the frame The answer would have been a smaller 'F' stop to increase the depth of field or use of a wider angle lens and getting in closer. The composition is good though; I'm just being a bit nit picky as I have to choose a winner!
Sunrise in the bay - Noelcmn
An early bird capture. It's a lovely sunrise scene and hard to fault. If I have to criticize something about it I feel that the main elements in the photo are too close to the edges so maybe a slightly wider angle to get them more on the thirds would balance the photo better. If you just had a 200mm prime that maybe wasn't possible of course. Not withstanding an excellent shot.
Sun's last gasp - drofmit
This has captured the rays from the 'going down of the sun' really well. But a niggle and maybe there's a good explanation, what are the distracting white artefacts at ther very bottom of the image? Whatever they are they don't seem to help and I feel they'd be better eliminated by some means. Besides that though it's a truly superb image in all respects.
Sun down on Goyt Meadow - johnjm
This has captured a sunny evening glow really well. However it does suffer with contrast issues. Maybe it would have helped to use a graduated filter to hold the sky back as the bright sky and sun has gone beyond what the sensor can cope with in a standard jpeg. Otherwise a candidate for capturing in raw or HDR and sorting the contrast out afterwards. I can just make out the flies!
So now the tricky job of selecting the podium places. It has been truly difficult, partly because PU coming and going all day and there are so many potential winners.
1st. Light Leak - tyronet2000
The patterns are very eye catching.
2nd. Sunshine - davidwozhere
No one can dispute it was sunny!
3rd. Out of Blue Skies - Perspicador
A well constructed image with no obvious flaws.
HCs. All the rest, but in particular these which have the potential to have won outright if presented differently.
Sun's last gasp - drofmit
Early Morning Sunshine - paulb531
Sunrise in the bay - Noelcmn
The sunshine of my life since 1957 - vic cross
Thanks again for entering and over to Stan (sorry to lumber you after only a week!)
