Monthly #55 - A Black and White Winterwonderland Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 31/01/2017
Judge: paulb531

It's January and that means bleak cold weather and maybe snow in this part of the world. I'm looking for winter scenes in black and white that I feel suits this setting. The subject matter is wide open. Just wrap up in the cold weather, get snapping and have fun.

For those who live in other parts of the world where it is your summer a seasonal theme from your part of the world is acceptable.

Usual monthly rules apply; photographs are to be taken in January with Pentax cameras or clones. The winner is expected to set and judge next months competition.

I'm looking forward what you can come up with.

Regards

Paul

Monthly #55 – A Black and White Wonderland

While some parts of Europe have experienced severe weather I can only remember one weekend this month when there was snow. I set January’s competition with severe weather in mind and I am glad to see some was found.

Old Leaf
Some unusual settings for a macro photo but it’s done the trick. I good idea capturing a shot of a frosty coated leaf. Perhaps it could have been improved by a wider DOF allowing the whole foreground to be in focus.

From inside.
Come on wrap up and get outside amongst it! Still a nice photo though with good composition, bokeh and tones.
Not quite real winter
Top marks for ingenuity. Not quite sure what the car is it looks an old one – a mini traveller I’m guessing.

Stormy North Sea
Friday 13th was some day to be out on the coast. A friend of mine lost his camera, mobile phone and his car keys in Filey, just up the road. You have captured the full force of the sea on that day - well done a great shot. An excellent black and conversion and top marks for bravery.

It’s cold and wet and a drip just landed on my head
A nice capture but perhaps it doesn’t depict the theme enough for me. It rains a lot in summer in this part of the world especially in the north where I come from.

Gonzenberg Switzerland
Wow what a photo. It looks a surreal landscape. It’s as if the mountain has been added afterwards. This wouldn’t be out of place in any photographic company. It just concerns me why you would want to withdraw it!

Winter Trees
I have just returned from holiday and friends have been telling me how cold it has been in the UK. A good composition and excellent BW conversion but not a winter theme I’m afraid.

Lone walker
I like this photo, an excellent shot with a good composition. The person in the background gives the viewer perspective.

Prospect Park, Brooklyn
At last snow. I can feel the cold temperature from here. A great shot with the added bonus of an interesting sky. The match people in the background adds depth – nice work.

Durham Passport Office
It looks a bit murky but I guess that’s been the theme this month. We can’t always get those crisp clear days in January. I suppose it’s the chance you take with this subject matter - so just blame me.

White out!
Your photo looks as though it fits the remit. The image is not that clear to me, did you take this through a window? I do admire a lot of your photos but this isn’t one of your better efforts I’m afraid.

Suburban Surfer
Ha Ha. When I set this competition I did wonder what Noel would come up with. A great fun image to finish off with.

Decision time and three excellent photos stood out from the rest that fitted the theme and had artist merit in my opinion.

Winner: Gonzenberg Switzerland By pipinmels

Thank you very much for my first monthly competition win.. I wasn't very happy with it, as the mountin did look like it was floating above the ground. Plus the last half a tree, seamed to not quite fit. Congratulation to all the other winners, and also to all that took part in this months competition..

Congrats to all and the juddge. We didn't really have any true winter wonderland weather, just many grey days. At least the Friday 13th storm gave me a subject to take so thanks for the third place for it. Had nothing close to pipinmels winter landscape to photograph this year (so far); a lovely image. I didn't realise they had bendy rubber lamp posts in Brooklyn, that's novel! I quite liked NiceSparky's Lone Walker too.

I'm glad someone asked the winner to enter the image - it's a good one. No need to apologise for that one at all.
