Monthly #110 - Intentional Camera Movement/Blurred Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 31/08/2021
Judge: andymat

There have been a few images I have seen on here recently which were created using camera movement techniques and I thought it would be a good challenge for a monthly competition where there is some time to think about and plan the photographic entries.

As usual in monthly competitions, the image must be taken during the month of the competition, i.e. August 2021 and with Pentax or Pentax clone cameras. Please leave EXIF data in tact showing date of capture or state the date if it is missing for some reason.

I am looking for pleasing images created using some sort of camera movement. So for instance vertical, horizontal, spinning movement. Or adjusting the zoom of a lens during the exposure or even the focus I guess might be another option. I suppose panning is intentionally moving the camera with the objective of keeping a moving object sharp so there is another possibility.

It could be a small amount of blurring to add some extra dimension to a picture or a complete swirl of colour or tone giving an abstract result. I don’t mind the image being processed but the movement should have been predominantly created by moving the camera during the exposure.

There are various videos on the internet giving tutorials on the technique if you need any hints. Here is one by a member of this forum, Geoff Moore, describing a vertical technique using a K-1...

And just searching the forum or the gallery for “ICM” turns up some great inspiration.

I look forward to seeing all your fantastic creations. Good luck.

As this competition is asking the entrants to do something less usual with their cameras, I would just like to say at the start that I am judging this purely subjectively.

Swim – Flan
Interesting take on the theme by using the lights at night to create the trail patterns. The chain across the top looks like Christmas decorations and the individual lights look like flying fish. Almost Dali like in conception and execution.

The Cardinal exploded with rage! – Drofmit
A very dramatic picture if not a bit gory. I do like how the reds and the greens blend into each other. While you can just about tell that there is a flower in there somewhere, the resulting image is almost entirely abstract. And I like it. And it grows on you as you look at it further and see the thin white hairs in the bottom left and the subtle darker details area on the lower right for instance.

Tangle Wood – Nigelk
This looks like a circular movement has produced this quite painterly image. It does look like an impressionist painting and they do say photography is painting with light. The foreground is quite dark but the highlights of the spots of sun and the further greenery though the gaps give it a great boost. Almost like a batique material pattern. Very soothing.

Road to Nowhere – Fodwick
Classy and well executed image - I hope it was done safely. It certainly give the impression of a higher speed than 8mph/kph. And I love that you have been able to keep the interior of the car more or less in focus while all the action is happening outside.

Poppies in the Wind – Jofford
Nice red and green palette and the way it is taken certainly accentuates the feeling of movement. I really like the smudged reds of the poppies but I wonder if all the other light brown seed heads are a bit distracting. But a good concept.

Orchid you not – Perspicador
Nice plant, although I am not sure the shortish exposure time has time to blur or smudge the colours too much. The background green patterning is a nice foil for the flower heads. Might have been better without the reflection in the window but a nice diagonal composition.

Sunflower – PRYorkshire
This flower image still looks like a flower. The short exposure helps with that but everything feels soft and gentle as if painted with water colour paints even though the colours themselves are bold. The colour palette is harmonious too and we have a fuzzy centre to draw the eye. Very nice.

Thank you all for taking the time to enter this competition. I hope it has sparked some creativity!

So finally, the placings are…
1st Road to Nowhere – Fodwick
2nd Sunflower – PRYorkshire
3rd The Cardinal exploded with rage! – Drofmit

HC Tangle Wood – Nigelk

Congrats to Fodwick.... I was interested to see the low speed and fast lines... fun!
Also to PRYorkshire and Nigelk....
Thank you for the third place and the interesting competition.... certainly moved me out of my comfort zone.
BUT... I think I will do quite a load more... it was really captivating.
Shame there weren't more entrants, but there you go... 'twas August and peoples are on holidays.
Never be afraid to talk about your techniques...

Thank you very much, andymat; I confess myself very chuffed indeed!
Congrats to my fellow pod spot winners, and Nigelk for the HC, though well done to all too, all good entries. It was a good comp, testing the imagination. Interesting takes on the same brief.
Come and see the beautiful things I see in the ordinary world.

Many thanks to Andymat for setting such a good competition and for the 2nd place. Something that I had never tried before and after a bit of experimentation quite pleased with the result and something that I want to experiment with further.

Thanks for all your comment every body. I was a bit nervous about the brief to be honest. I did have a quick go myself to test whether I could get something worthwhile and was quite pleased with the result. So I will also be playing the the idea further too.

Thanks all again for the entries and good luck with this month’s competition from Fodwick.
