This week we have been browsing Flickr and found a brilliantly unique photographer, willing to be featured in Pentax User. When, lo and behold! We found Andrei Seki, an 18 year old Flickr user and fantastic photographer. This is how the interview with Andrei Seki went...
I use a Pentax *ist DS because at the time I purchased it, it had better features such as a pentaprism viewfinder and a secondary LCD to display shooting information which other cameras in the price range did not have. Although now I'm saving up to buy a more advanced camera.
Do you have a favourite lens?
It's hard to choose. Currently, I shoot only with the 18-55mm kit and a Tamron 70-300mm and I prefer the Tamron as the focal length is better suited to portraiture.
What area of photography interests you the most?
I like shooting portraiture as it is a more personal type of photography where you interact directly with the person you are photographing. Also, I find it a challenge to capture not just the person, but the personality and feeling. And I like challenges. But of course I enjoy other genres of photography as well, especially HDR, and I'm still experimenting with other forms.
Why do you use Pentax equipment?
I originally chose a Pentax due to its build quality among different cameras in the price range. It just felt sturdy compared to the entry level Canon/Nikon cameras at the time. I knew that the *ist DS was already an "old" camera when I bought it but so far it has survived being dropped in the mud of the North Sea, the snow of the Swiss Alps, and the rain of the Netherlands.
What made you pick the subject that you work on?
Again, I tend to focus more on portraiture due to the personal interaction between subject and photographer and the challenge of capturing a unique photo of the subject. My other favorite, HDR photography, started originally due to the lack of dynamic range of the camera but soon became a new art form.
Is photography just a hobby or do you get paid for the pictures you take?
Photography is just a hobby for me, as I'm still a student and cannot commit to it being a full time profession. But I did make 40 euros to have some of my photos featured in a Benelux publication.
When did you start to be interested in photography?
I became interested in photography when my family got our first digital camera (a Sony 3 megapixel point and shoot) as I found myself taking more and more photos without fear of wasting film.
What piece of equipment can you not be without?
A camera. Any type of camera, be it a DSLR or point and shoot. A photographer cannot be without a camera. You never know when a photo opportunity will come your way.
If you could take a picture of just one thing what would it be and why?
If I had one photo, that would be a photo of me and my family. A photograph is there to capture a particular moment in time and I want that moment to be us together.
What's the best piece of advice you have heard?
Know yourself and you will win all battles." (Sun Tzu) “This is what I believe to be the most important piece of advice to anyone. Once you understand your full capability you'll find that nothing is impossible.
Any photographers who you admire and why?
My biggest inspiration would have to be Joe McNally. His photos are just captivating and since I have began using off-camera flash in some portraits, his works have become a standard I try to achieve.
Do you have a favourite image if so what is it and why?
I can't say I have a favorite image. Each and every photo is unique in its own way and I appreciate each and every one of them.
If you could go anywhere and do anything, what would you do and why?
“I would love to travel the world and photograph all the different places and the people who inhabit those places and their various ways of life.”
